From one controversy to another, Coco Gauff can’t catch a break in 2026. Gauff recently grabbed headlines at the Stuttgart Open after her innocent Rafael Nadal comment.

After winning her first match at Stuttgart, Gauff jokingly referred to herself as a “Walmart version of Rafa,” a humble nod to 14-time Roland Garros champion. She has always been a huge Nadal fan, having admired his “unmatched” intensity, mentality, and practice habits.

When asked who she models her game after, the defending French Open champion said:

“The greatest clay court player is Rafa [Nadal]. I don’t quite play like him, but I do try to hit my forehand like he does on clay. I don’t run around as much because my forehand isn’t as good as Rafa. But I try to hit it like him.”

After asking for the mic back, Gauff hesitantly added:

“Like a Walmart version of Rafa. I don’t want to be like obliterated online. Like a lesser version of Rafa, OK?”

How Fans Reacted to Coco Gauff’s “Walmart” Rafael Nadal Version Admission

Recently, a fan going by the name Christian’s Court dissected the incident and shared how the past incidents have affected Coco Gauff so much that she needed to clarify so that she doesn’t fall on the bad side of the fans.

“But I think it’s sad she felt the need to clarify that statement because she didn’t want to get dragged online,” Gauff said. “Being Gen Z, Coco’s probably more privy to seeing what’s being said about her online, and while she does receive a lot of love, she also gets a crazy amount of unnecessary hate, with people often dragging her serve and forehand. And clearly she anticipated some hate from her answer, which is why she made that self-deprecating joke, but still, it’s unfortunate she felt compelled to do so.”

Christian’s Court went deeper into his analysis, drawing references on how players have spoken with raw honesty before and then needing to apologize for the same. He pointed out Aryna Sabalenka needing to apologize for her dig at Gauff after losing the 2025 French Open.

Christian’s Court believes players should be able to speak freely without worrying about the consequences. But he also understands social media these days and how it can tear apart a player’s mental health.
