Taylor Townsend recently recalled her initial reaction to being invited on a trip with Naomi Osaka, revealing that she was hesitant. The American currently wrapped up her Miami Open campaign.
Townsend concluded her Miami Open singles journey on March 21 after her loss against Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 64. The latter dominated the first and the tie-breaker set, claiming a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over the American. Shortly after this upset, she appeared on ‘The Changeover Podcast,’ which is hosted by Justin Roberts and Jody Maginley.
In this podcast, one of the highlight topics of the conversation was her friendship with Naomi Osaka and their viral Turk trip in November last year. Opening up about the truth behind this trip, she revealed that at first she was hesitant to go on the trip, as she didn’t know the Japanese player much.
“The Turk trip was very interesting. I didn’t know what to expect. I was really shocked that I was invited. I was like, ‘Huh?’ I was going and like I knew her but I didn’t really know her. It’s such a toss-up to invite a stranger on a vacation, like I was stuck…I was kind of hesitant. I told her this; I’m like, girl I was not going to come because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, like, I didn’t know who was going to be there,” said Taylor Townsend.
However, she added that it ended up being the best trip ever and complimented Osaka, calling her ‘cool.’
“But it ended up being the best trip ever. It was the second vacation I’ve ever taken in my life…She’s actually really cool and she’s f***ing hilarious. But it’s the way that she talks. You have to be listening because she doesn’t like talk loud and when she speaks, she speaks. She not gonna say it multiple times. Like you got to catch it when you catch it,” she added.
Townsend is currently competing at the women’s doubles at the Miami Open, alongside Katerina Siniakova. She advanced to the finals after besting Luisa Stefani and Gabriela Dabrowski.
Taylor Townsend on Her Miami Open Doubles Semifinals Clash
Taylor Townsend and her partner Katerina Siniakova delivered a dominant performance at the Miami Open doubles semifinal clash against Luisa Stefani and Gabriela Dabrowski. After losing the first set, the American and her partner picked up momentum, claiming a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory.
Shortly after this victory, they sat for a conversation with the Tennis Channel, where Townsend was asked about what got her through the match. Calling it a ‘tough’ match, she said that she wasn’t feeling ‘great’ off the ground; however, she believed that they had a lot of opportunities and kept fighting until the last point.
“A lot of laughs today. Yeah, today it was a tough match. Like, I mean, for me, I can speak for myself. I wasn’t feeling great off of the ground. I just felt like everything was moving very quickly, which is what can happen in doubles, you know? And I just didn’t feel like we were getting like any momentum. It was one of those things where everything was missing by this much Kat was missing on the tape, you know, their serves were on the lines and like really good serves, good spots,” said Taylor Townsend.
She added:
“I literally told Kat on the changeover, I was like, it’s just one of those days and I was like, let’s just keep trying to do what we can and have fun and enjoy, keep making them try to come up with the goods because you know, it’s not over until the very last point. And I really felt like we had opportunities.”
Taylor Townsend and Siniakova will face Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the finals of the Miami Open’s doubles.
