Serena Williams reportedly made her frustrations clear about the anti-doping rules just before returning to the Wimbledon Championships. The main draw of the Grand Slam is scheduled to start from Monday, June 29, to July 11, 2026.
Speculations of Williams’ return to tennis began in December 2025 after she had re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s registered anti-doping pool. It is a mandatory drug-testing pool, where athletes are required to report their daily whereabouts for random testing and complete a six-month cooling period before regaining tournament eligibility. However, when asked about a potential comeback at that time, she had firmly denied it.
Six months after those rumors surfaced, the American has made her return to tennis and has so far competed in the double events of the HSBC Championships and Berlin Open. She is now focused on her comeback at Wimbledon, where she is scheduled to face Maya Joint in the opening round on June 29. Ahead of her return to the All England Club, Williams reportedly made a furious admission about anti-doping rules. Speaking during her pre-tournament press conference, she expressed her frustration, saying:
“It’s unprofessional. I hate it. I think it’s necessary but if I want to go places outside of my window I should be able to go without having to count as a missed test. That was a big reason why I didn’t want to come back,” said Serena Williams.
Serena Williams revealed her mindset about competing in Wimbledon
During her pre-championship press conference, Serena Williams was asked how she is feeling about heading into her first Wimbledon match this year compared to previous editions, when she often arrived as the defending champion or one of the tournament favorites. Responding to this, the American opened up about her mindset as she prepares for her comeback at the All England Club, saying:
“So I think my feelings would be different. And I think in general my expectations are definitely different for the first time in my career. And I feel like my feelings are just not that I never enjoyed it before cuz or else I wouldn’t be here today, but I feel like I’m really going to have, I’m going to enjoy being out there,” said Serena Williams.
“I there’s so many players that Oh, so first the first part of the question is yes, I did follow not every single match in every single tournament, mostly just grand slams. Seeing Sabalenka just kind of do so well in so many of those Grand Slams has always been really cool to watch her. I love her intensity out there.”
