The clock is ticking for Serena Williams as the singles draw of Wimbledon is soon to be finalized with wild cards and direct entries. While the 23-time Grand Slam champion received a wild-card entry into the doubles draw with her sister Venus Williams, her chances of playing singles at the slam remain a mystery.
When asked about her thoughts on possibly accepting the final singles draw card if offered, Williams refused to provide a direct response, leaving fans worldwide on a cliffhanger that has now invited speculation.
During her post-match conference after her doubles opener (partnering with Karolina Muchova) at the Berlin Open on Tuesday (June 16), Williams’ response to a possible singles return at Wimbledon stood out. In a video shared by the Tennis Channel on their X account, Williams playfully went back and forth with the reporters to keep the speculation alive:
“Oh my gosh, there’s still some left? I better get to practice,” said Williams at the press conference upon knowing that the singles draw hadn’t yet been finalized.
The American then turned to the probing reporter and asked if they thought she was ready before concluding with a cliffhanger response:
“That’s the question of the hour, right? I don’t know. I don’t know.”
While Williams ended her answer with mystery, fans on social media have expressed frustration at not getting a clear answer from the tennis legend. The first list of wild-card spots have been announced, with only one opening left in the WTA draw for now.

Serena Williams returned earlier this month to play a doubles match at the Queen’s Club tournament after a four-year hiatus and won her opening round match. Despite withdrawing from the tournament due to her partner Victoria Mboko’s, injury, Williams flew over to Germany to team up with Muchova for another doubles matchup at the Berlin Open. Unfortunately, the duo fell to Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe, 6-4, 6-4.
Serena Williams To Play Doubles Alongside Venus Williams At Wimbledon
The Williams sisters are returning to compete in the women’s doubles at Wimbledon to reignite one of the most dominant partnerships in tennis history. The duo have won the doubles title together six times at SW19 so far.
Venus & Serena Williams received the wild card completely at the discretion of the All England Club, and this marks their first doubles match together since the 2022 US Open. It remains to be seen if the blockbuster duo could yet again bring the fiery intensity they had during their prime at the upcoming Slam, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, 29th June.
