Serena Williams’ Ex-Coach Fires Back At Lindsey Vonn Critics Targeting Skier For Racing With Torn ACL At Winter Olympics

Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs, has blasted those questioning Lindsey Vonn after an unfortunate accident at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, February 8. The three-time Olympic medallist suffered a horrific crash in the women’s downhill event, as she was making her comeback.

On January 30, a week before her training run for the Winter Olympics, the 41-year-old suffered another serious accident during her downhill World Cup race in Switzerland. The crash was so severe that it led to a torn ACL. After this accident, a lot of fans speculated about Vonn’s participation in the Winter Olympics.

However, determined to do well and despite conquering everything, she reached Italy and started training. Vonn, who retired after the 2018 Olympics due to multiple injuries, was airlifted after her crash this Sunday.

Fans once again criticized Lindsey Vonn, believing that since she had a torn ACL, she should have withdrawn and given the opportunity to someone else.

Rennae Stubbs posted a few tweets in this regard. Her first tweet before the crash read:

“For all the “why is skiing & taking a spot from someone else who’s healthy when she has a torn ACL” crowd…just to update u non athletes, she’s is currently 3rd in the last training run in Cortina (in flat light btw)! So take a seat next time u think u know better!”

Stubbs put out a couple of tweets after the accident and firmly stood by Vonn, saying that the crash was not a result of the torn ACL.

“NON PRO ATHLETES! didnt crash today because of her knee, she crashed cause she took a hard line at the gate & her pole wrapped it & flung her sideways! She raced TWICE on the knee & finished 11th & 3rd in training! this was a ski racing accident not a lack of an ACL,” she wrote.

    Stubbs concluded by tweeting:

“For all you saying oh she shouldn’t have skied with the ACL tear blah blah. She skied twice on it already & came 3rd yesterday in training! It was her hard line to the gate & her right pole wrapping her arm into! It had nothing to do with her knee! So stop with the nonsense.”

Serena Williams Reveals What Sets The ‘Best Athletes’ Apart

Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams launched a new podcast on X called “Stockton Street” in September 2025. On the latest episode, they welcomed American businessman and a minority owner of the NFL team Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban.

While they discussed business and entrepreneurship, Serena compared it to sports and weighed in on what separates great athletes like Michael Jordan, the late Kobe Bryant, and herself from others. She said (11:18):

“I think the best athletes, like the Jordans and the Kobes, and the Serenas, are people who really love it. They don’t do it for fame, they don’t do it for anything. There are so many entrepreneurs now, right? But I feel like that is kind of one thing that really sets someone out. So if you’re watching, what can really set you apart is if you really find something that you truly are passionate about and that you truly, truly, truly love.”
