Joao Fonseca commented on Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s playing styles after competing against them in recent tournaments. His comment grabbed the attention of Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who shared his opinion.
Fonseca battled against Sinner in the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters, where the fans witnessed a terrific showdown. The Italian eventually claimed a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) triumph over the Brazilian. Fonseca then competed at the Miami Open, where he met Alcaraz in the round of 64, with the Spaniard winning 6-4, 6-4.
After playing against the top two players, Fonseca said Alcaraz has more ‘arsenal’ than the World No. 2.
“I think Alcaraz has more arsenal than Sinner. He can do everything. It’s more difficult to understand the game. Sinner is more like a robot that just kills the ball,” said Fonseca.
This caught the attention of Mouratoglou, who reacted to the Brazilian’s comment, calling it ‘interesting.’ Weighing in on the 19-year-old’s thoughts on Alcaraz, Mouratoglou said:
“I feel the opinion of Joao Fonseca on Alcaraz and Sinner after playing them back to back is very interesting. Carlos is incredibly creative, and he has an incredible arsenal, as Joe says it. We’ve seen that when in an overdose of tennis, he loses his creativity. Up and down, he makes many more unenforced errors, and then it’s not the same player anymore.”
“On the other hand, you have Jannik Sinner. I understand what Joao means by saying he’s like a robot; it’s just a feeling he has, like a guy who hits the ball incredible on both sides, taking the ball super early, and he almost never misses. Am I surprised by Joao saying this? Yes, a little bit. He doesn’t try to be politically correct. He says what he thinks after playing against the best two players in the world and explaining the differences between those two guys.”
How did Jannik Sinner respond to Joao Fonseca’s comments?
“I saw, you know, he is right. Coming from a player who played me the week before and now Carlos here, it was the perfect explanation. I wish him only the best. He is playing an incredible high level of tennis and I believe he will make big steps forward. He has a very good team behind him and also a very good family. I wish him only the best. I’m a very big fan of his.”
