Tennis fans online called out Carlos Alcaraz for some of his comments at the ongoing Indian Wells Masters. Despite losing the first set, he bounced back to defeat Arthur Rinderknech 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, March 10.
Alcaraz continued his undefeated streak this season, as he is 14-0 after his latest win. The World No. 1 won his maiden Australian Open title and the WTA 500 Qatar Open to record his best start to a season.
At a press conference after his match against Rinderknech, the Spaniard pointed out that the lower-ranked players tend to play out of their skins against him, but they don’t play as tough against other lower-ranked players.
“To be honest, sometimes I get tired of feeling like I’m playing against Roger Federer in every round. Sometimes it seems like everyone is playing at an incredibly high level. I don’t know if it’s just my feeling, but I feel like it always happens to me. If they played at that level in every match, they should be much higher in the rankings,” he said.
Fans online were confused as they opined that it was natural for weaker players, who have nothing to lose, to give it all against top players like Alcaraz.
“Serena essentially always said this throughout her career. I wonder if other top players like Jannik or Aryna feel the same way too,” a fan wrote.
“Are you really praising all this? It’s logical that against the best they try to play to the best of their ability. Moreover, he complains when he always has easy tournament, come on, what nonsense,” another one commented.
“It’s such a sore loser, self-absorbed thing to say. How do they know their opponents are playing “better” against them? Show me the stats and facts to back it up,” a user wrote.
“Why is this upsetting, strange or tiring? It is what it is, and if you are great then deal with it in a greater way,” another one chimed in.
“They are trying to beat him… what’s wrong? Are u scared because lower player play good against you? That’s normal,” someone said.
Novak Djokovic Lauds Carlos Alcaraz’s Golf Skills
During an interview with Tennis Channel earlier this week, Novak Djokovic mentioned a recent golf outing with Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev.
“It was my first time playing with these guys. It was fun. It was a lot of laughter, a lot of mind games. But it was great,” Djokovic said.
Expressing his surprise at how well Alcaraz plays, the Serb added:
“I mean, I show up, and on the first hole, the guy rips a 300-yard drive. It’s a par 5, and he’s going for his eagle, and I’m like, ‘Is there anything you’re not good at, man? Like, what’s going on here?'”
Meanwhile, Djokovic and Zverev have reached the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals, respectively, at the BNP Paribas Open.
Alcaraz will face Casper Ruud in the last-16 clash on Wednesday, March 11.
