Carlos Alcaraz’s participation in Roland Garros is in doubt following his right arm injury. Alcaraz suffered discomfort in his wrist after his opening-round win in the Barcelona Open. He withdrew from the tournament and also decided to skip the Madrid Open.
Speculation about his participation in the French Open is on the rise. Alcaraz will undergo a crucial examination in the coming days that will ultimately determine whether he can participate.
Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni Nadal, believes Alcaraz will not play at Roland Garros. He feels the defending French Open champion is making a smart choice by prioritizing his long-term career.
“At his age, he shouldn’t take any risks,” Toni said. “He still has many years ahead of him, and it’s much better to be cautious. (…) Generally, it’s not advisable to return to competition if the injury isn’t completely healed, and I think that’s what he’s going to do. It’s a shame because he had a great chance of winning the title again. It’s tough for him, but I think he’s being smart by prioritizing his career over his desire to play immediately.”
Toni also mentioned that Alcaraz has nothing to be disappointed about, even if he is unable to play in Roland Garros this year. He has already won the Australian Open.
“He doesn’t need to push himself,” Toni added. “Even if things haven’t gone perfectly in the last three tournaments, it’s already been a very good year for him. He’s already won a Grand Slam. If he’s told his participation isn’t certain, he won’t participate because, moreover, at this level, you have to be in top form to perform at the level you deserve. It’s better not to force it.”
Carlos Alcaraz Honored at 2026 Laureus Awards
Carlos Alcaraz’s trip to Madrid wasn’t entirely a waste. The seven-time Grand Slam champion was announced as Laureus World Sportsman of the Year at the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards for his performances last season.
Alcaraz won two Grand Slams and numerous ATP titles while also finishing the year at No. 1. With the win, the Spaniard joins an exclusive list of tennis legends who have claimed the award, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
