Poland captured their first-ever United Cup title on Sunday night (Jan. 11), sparking celebrations across the nation, including from Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The Polish team defeated Switzerland in the final to claim their maiden crown, having finished runners-up in both of the previous editions. The victory was met with strong support from Polish fans in the stadium and at home.
Prime Minister Tusk joined in the celebrations by sharing a video on X of the decisive moment when Poland secured the title following the decisive mixed doubles rubber. In the clip, he can be seen on his knees, cheering passionately as Jan Zielinski and Katarzyna Kawa sealed the win.
“Snowy and political blizzards and storms, and here such joy! Iga, Kasia, Hubi, and Janek, Superteam,” Tusk wrote on X.
Earlier in the tie, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek suffered her second consecutive defeat of the competition, losing to an in-form Belinda Bencic 3–6, 6–0, 6–3.
Hubert Hurkacz restored parity for Poland with a hard-fought 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 win over Stanislas Wawrinka.
As has often been the case throughout the tournament this year, the title was decided in the mixed doubles rubber. Zielinski and Kawa clinched a 6–4, 6–3 victory over Bencic and J. Paul to secure Poland’s maiden United Cup title.
Third Time’s The Charm As Poland Win Maiden United Cup Title
Poland claimed their first-ever United Cup title in 2026, ending a run of near-misses after finishing runners-up to the United States and Germany in the previous two editions.
Swiatek, who was part of all three Polish teams, praised Hurkacz for his impressive comeback and also highlighted the contribution of the mixed doubles pairing of Zielinski and Kawa.
“Finally, we made it, third time lucky,” Swiatek said during the trophy ceremony. “I really felt it was a team effort this year. Hubi, what a comeback after so many months. You played amazing. You inspired us all with determination. I feel you improved every part of our game. Our doubles team, wow! You just beat everyone. It was amazing.”
Hurkacz completed an emotional return from injury after a seven-month layoff, winning four of his five singles matches during the week. His run included two top-10 victories over Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz.
“I’m kind of speechless. It’s really incredible. Obviously personally, but also a massive day for Poland, for Polish tennis. We showed how strong we are as a Polish country in tennis. To win that trophy, it tastes incredible. After we came very close two times. Just so grateful to the whole team, everyone supporting each other, just being together and enjoying the competition,” Hurkacz said.
