Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, weighed in on the American’s return to professional tennis and expressed supreme optimism about what the 23-time Grand Slam winner can achieve on the court. Mouratoglou reminded the world about Serena’s ability to do the impossible and make it look easy, while also expressing concern regarding the legend’s current lifestyle and age, which could be a negative factor.
Serena Williams’ return has sparked colossal excitement within the tennis community, and all the elite and rising players of today’s tennis have expressed nothing but shock and thrill to see the legend back in action. Tennis coaches, too, have given their take on what possibilities of success the returning legend could have on her first grass-court stop.
Patrick Mouratoglou was one of many who poured in his analysis on Williams’ return. Mouratoglou has been an important figure in Williams’ professional journey, having coached the legend from 2012 to 2022. During this decade, Mouratoglou led Williams to winning her 2012 Olympic gold medal, her fifth, sixth, and seventh Wimbledon titles, and several other accolades that skyrocketed Williams’ profile to unmatched levels.
Since the American made her return official, Mouratoglou highlighted the mindset that has defined Williams’ profile, suggesting how her comeback is more about testing her own limits since becoming a mother rather than getting back into competition just for the sake of it.
“If Serena decides to come back on court, she’s not coming back to be average, that’s not her. First of all, she starts with doubles. she didn’t say she would play singles, I feel that she wants to test herself. I think she wants to know where she stands. I guess she needs to feel herself on the court to maybe make a decision to go further or not.”
He also mentioned William’s ability to do the impossible with total ease:
“Does it make sense at 44 to go back on tour after not competing for 4 or 5 years with two kids? No, it doesn’t make sense, but that’s Serena, Serena did things that were impossible because she thinks “I can do it.”I’m not saying she’s going to be number 1 in the world, I’m saying, nothing is impossible for Serena.”
Williams’ first stop is a doubles match, and despite it going either way, Mouratoglou believes that the American will, in some ways, manage to rewrite the rulebook.
Regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard, it remains to be seen if Williams can keep up with the dominating forces that are currently ruling the WTA tour.
Aryna Sabalenka Expresses Interest in Facing Serena Williams
The chances of a world No. 1 collision are beginning to generate a buzz as the current No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has expressed a strong interest in wanting to square off against the former world No. 1 Serena Williams. During a press conference, Sabalenka highlighted how exciting the American’s return is for tennis while also mentioning her desire to face the Grand Slam queen.
“That’s fun, that’s cool, she has a really cool personality, she’s fun, she’s a legend, and it’s inspiring to see and I’m actually excited to see her play and probably face her, so it’s very good news for tennis,” she said.
Sabalenka has, however, had to bid a shocking farewell to Roland Garros after her stunning loss to Russia’s Diana Shnaider, and it remains to be seen how the Belarusian will regroup for her upcoming endeavors for the remainder of the season.
