Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou shared his thoughts on how good Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are when compared to all-time greats. The two tennis stars have taken the sport by storm in the last couple of years, winning every Grand Slam, much like the Big 3 dominated tennis for the better part of the last two decades. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all have over 20 Grand Slams to their name.
On Wednesday, Mouratoglou was asked if the prime version of Alcaraz and Sinner could have beaten prime Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Unlike the popular opinion, the coach sided with the current stars and he explained his reasoning.
“I think they would win. Alcaraz and Sinner would win,” Mouratoglou.
The coach also mentioned that had Alcaraz and Sinner played in the same era, the Big 3 wouldn’t have allowed them to reach the elite level. Mouratoglou believes Alcaraz and Sinner are better because tennis continues to improve with every generation.
“I think if they play better than the previous ones who were playing, it’s just because, again, tennis evolves,” the coach said. “And probably the next generation is going to play better than Alcaraz and Sinner, probably because tennis, sports, are moving all the time. Look at the records in the 100 meters. You think it’s impossible to beat them, and then the next generation comes along and runs faster.”
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in AO Semis
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have made it to the last four of the Grand Slam yet again. In the ongoing Australian Open, Sinner defeated Ben Shelton in straight sets, while Alcaraz overcame the challenge of Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals.
The top two-ranked stars are joined by the No. 3 Alexander Zverev and No. 4 Novak Djokovic, making it the first time since 2013 that the top four seeds make it to the semis in Melbourne Park. Zverev defeated Learner Tien while Djokovic was down two sets when Lorenzo Mussetti retired to give the Serb an entry into the semifinals.
Sinner is set to face Djokovic, who is chasing the elusive 25th Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, Alcaraz will face Zverev, who has yet to win a single Grand Slam in his career. It remains to be seen if we can witness a fourth straight Sincaraz finals in the Grand Slam.
