Citing a shoulder injury, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Masters 1000 Miami Open, beginning March 18. The Serb has played only two tournaments so far this season, the Australian Open and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
While he reached the final in Melbourne and was one win away from a 25th Grand Slam title, he lost to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, despite winning the first set. However, Djokovic defeated Jannik Sinner in the semifinals in a five-set thriller.
At the Indian Wells Open, the former World No. 1 lost to Britain’s Jack Draper in the Round of 16 in a close three-set contest. While he was set to feature in the second leg of the Sunshine Double, Djokovic announced his withdrawal on Sunday, March 15.
“Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Miami Open presented by Itaú due to a right shoulder injury. Get well soon, Nole ♥️,” ATP Tour wrote on X.
Djokovic has 14 appearances in Miami, as he has won six titles so far. His last victory in Florida came in 2016, when he defeated Kei Nishikori in the final.
After the 2026 Miami Masters, three ATP 250 events are lined up in Houston, Marrakech, and Bucharest. However, the World No. 3 is expected to return to action at the Monte-Carlo Masters, beginning April 5.
“Proud of Myself for Fighting” – Novak Djokovic After Indian Wells Loss to Jack Draper
Novak Djokovic beat Kamil Majchrzak and Aleksandar Kovacevic in his first two matches at the BNP Paribas Open. However, he lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) to Jack Draper in the Round of 16.
In the post-match press conference, the 38-year-old said he was content with the way he fought the 24-year-old Brit.
“I don’t know. I mean, a bitter feeling right now, losing the match like this. But proud of myself for fighting and really giving it all on the court, that’s for sure, that’s the one thing that I’ll take as a highlight, and you know just the fact of not giving up and trying,” he said.
“Obviously, I lost to a great player, and it was really such an even match throughout the entire two and a half hours. But yeah, just a bit disappointed, of course, with getting off the court, fresh off the court. It is okay. I wish I could have done better, but it was a good fight,” he added.
