Novak Djokovic’s Wife Jelena Brings Attention To Tennis Great’s Rise Against All Odds

Novak Djokovic’s wife Jelena recently shared a moving video originally made by a noted director and writer from Auckland, New Zealand. The video was all about the Serbian legend’s rise to the very top of the tennis world from humble beginnings. It also featured several inspiring quotes from the former World No. 1 and 24-time Major champion, with some of them dating back to when he was just a child.

On Saturday, January 3, Fraser Grut, the Kiwi director and writer, shared the video as an Instagram Reel. Nine days later, on January 12, Djokovic’s wife Jelena saw it for herself. Clearly impressed by Grut’s creative brilliance as a nuanced filmmaker, she posted the reel as her Instagram Story, once again reminding the world about her husband’s difficult but great journey.

Djokovic began playing tennis recreationally when he was just 4 or 5 years old. Eventually, his pursuit of the sport became serious, but it had its complications. For instance, during his childhood, he survived large-scale NATO bombings in Belgrade. Later, when he did start making a mark on the ATP Tour in the 2000s, his potential was often questioned, and he regularly faced criticism due to multiple mid-match retirements.

Eventually though, he became the third member of the famed ‘Big Three’ alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. He would go on to surpass the Swiss and Spaniard’s respective Grand Slam title hauls and is the only remaining active member of the illustrious trio, which reflects his incredible longevity and how hard he has worked to maintain both his body and mind.

Novak Djokovic Currently In Melbourne Preparing For Australian Open 2026

Djokovic is the record 10-time champion in Melbourne, and he is set to have another shot at glory at the Australian Open this year. The Serb was originally slated to make his first competitive outing of the 2026 tennis season at the Adelaide International, but he withdrew from the event citing a lack of physical preparedness.

However, the 101-time career singles titlist has made it to Melbourne and pictures and videos of him practicing for the ‘Happy Slam’ have already sparked discussions, particularly among his loyal fans, who are only too happy to see him still having the desire of gunning for what would be an all-time record 25th Major title triumph.

Last year, Djokovic reached the semis of all four Slams, but couldn’t progress any further. In Melbourne, he retired mid-match with injury after losing the first set of his semifinal against Alexander Zverev. In the other Majors, he was ousted either by current World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz or the second-ranked Jannik Sinner.
