Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka began her French Open campaign with a victory in the first round, defeating Laura Siegemund at Court Suzanne Lenglen on Tuesday. She played her signature style from the start, but her outfit quickly drew attention from fans and media as soon as she stepped onto the court.
Osaka entered the clay court dressed entirely in black, a look that famous Swiss couturier Kevin Germanier reinterpreted from her previous competition attire. Underneath this custom walk-on outfit, Osaka showcased her fashionable Nike ensemble: a light-brown skirt with a ruffled, two-tiered peplum and vertical gold sequins in varying sizes.
After her heartbreaking early exit from the tournament, Siegemund was asked for her honest opinion on Osaka’s impressive Roland Garros outfit, prompting the German to give a clear and amusing response. “I honestly don’t care. I’m here to play tennis, not to do a fashion show,” Siegemund said.
Naomi Osaka Felt Like the Glittery Eiffel Tower at Night in Her French Open Fit
After winning in straight sets, Osaka was asked about her glittery outfit during the postgame interview. She said she felt confident and comfortable, likening it to the shimmering Eiffel Tower at night. She also reflected on how swiftly she gets into her game mode, especially after making a grand entrance at a tournament.
“It’s very couture. You know the Eiffel Tower at night when it’s sparkly. I kind of think I look like that a little bit. I’m a little used to it now. The US Open, the roses in my hair, that’s when I started to really get into it a lot more. Obviously with Australia, that was a real conversation starter,” Osaka said.
“So I don’t really feel like it’s too much of a big deal to do that and then play after. Athletes are in show business. Grand Slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I’m an entertainer,” she added.
Osaka will now play Donna Vekic in the second round of Roland Garros on Thursday.
