Martina Navratilova Expresses Raw Sentiment as Netflix Reveals Date for “Chris & Martina: The Final Set”

Focused on the legendary rivalry between tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, Netflix has recently shared the release date of “Chris & Martina: The Final Set.” The exciting tennis documentary is scheduled for release on June 29, 2026, on Netflix.

The documentary delves into their historic on-court battles and their deep friendship off the court. Moreover, both were diagnosed with cancer around the same time, so the documentary is expected to cover that as well.

Two months before the release, Navratilova recently took to Instagram and shared a small photo from the documentary, showing the two tennis legends sitting on a couch and having a candid conversation. Navratilova promoted the documentary in the caption as she wrote:

“To share the stage with Chris Evert for the past 5 decades has been an incredible privilege – our documentary Final Set is out on 26th June 2026 – @netflixfilm.”

What Makes Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert’s Rivalry Special?

Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert defined women’s tennis since the 1970s. Evert dominated the early part of this rivalry before Navratilova started to match up and eventually took the lead in the head-to-head record.

It was the most-played rivalry in the Open Era, with 60 of their 80 matches being finals. Navratilova leads the head-to-head record, 43-37. In WTA tournament finals, Navratilova leads 36-24. She also leads their Grand Slam encounters, 14-8, and is 10-4 in Grand Slam finals. However, on clay, Evert was more dominant, with an 11-3 record.

This rivalry held the No. 1 ranking for 592 of the first 615 weeks of the WTA rankings. Moreover, they won 15 consecutive Grand Slam titles (1981-1985) between them.

“Without one another, we would have both won more majors, but our level of tennis wouldn’t be as high,” Navratilova once said about their rivalry.

Last August at the 2025 Tennis Hall of Fame, Martina Navratilova spoke highly about her relationship with Evert, filled with respect, understanding, and empathy. She shared that they wanted the best for each other. She also shared that despite losing Wimbledon 1978 to her, Evert was genuinely happy.

Even after retirement, Chris Evert and Navratilova have remained close to each other, meeting regularly and sharing life updates. The Final Set documentary will show “archival footage, intimate interviews, and behind-the-scenes access during their treatments and recovery.”

Tennis fans will get to know more about this relationship once the documentary hits the Netflix platform.
