Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula are friends and co-hosts on The Player’s Box podcast. They played against each other in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Unlike their previous two encounters, Pegula leveled their head-to-head record by beating the fellow American in straight sets.
In the press conference, Keys was asked if she would be supporting Pegula for the remainder of the tournament after she failed to defend her Australian Open title. Keys revealed she would rather not say anything, as things often turn out quite the opposite.
“No, I’m not going to say anything, because the last time we told Jess that she was going to do well, she didn’t do well,” Keys told the reporter (6:35). “So she told us that we’re all banned from saying anything. And I don’t think she needs any sort of pep talk from me. I think she’s very sure of her game and how she’s playing, and we’ll just be cheering her on.”
After beating Keys, the sixth-seeded Jessica Pegula has entered the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Her next opponent would be another fellow American, No. 4 Amanda Anisimova, who reached here after defeating Wang Xinyu in straight sets.
Jessica Pegula Wins Wager Against Madison Keys And Avoided Wearing Chiefs Jersey
After her 6-3, 6-4 win, Jessica Pegula revealed that she and Madison Keys entered a wager based on the outcome of the match. Depending on who wins, the opposition would be forced to do a thing.
If Madison Keys lost, she would have to eat apple pie with cheddar cheese on top. If Pegula lost, she would have to wear a Kansas City Chiefs jersey.
It would have been a cardinal sin for Pegula to wear the Chiefs jersey since she is the owner of the Buffalo Bills, Terry Pegula. The Chiefs and the Bills are fierce rivals and it would have been comfortable for her to wear the jersey of Taylor Swift, who is the fiancée of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Meanwhile, Keys openly called the apple-pie-with-cheese idea “disgusting” and initially refused to go through with it if she lost.
