Tennis legend John McEnroe has found himself amidst a growing backlash after his commentary style at the French Open sparked outrage among the tennis community. From prioritizing a basketball game to giving practically no analysis of players during a match, McEnroe’s recent stint at Roland Garros has enveloped the former World No. 1 with a thick blanket of controversy that is expected to linger on for a while.
From injuries to early exits of the elite contenders like Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff, this year’s Roland Garros has been one for the underdogs. Action has also been wild at the commentary box as legend McEnroe has made the booth into a show of spectacle.
However, McEnroe has been heavily criticized by fans recently for his repetitive style of analysis, which forced many to compare the legend with a fellow master of the sport, Jim Courier. The differences became obvious to many during the heated fourth-round clash between Casper Ruud and Joao Fonseca, where many felt Courier had something deep and insightful to offer compared to the ‘rambling’ McEnroe.
One user said:
“McEnroe has never been ‘good,’ but he gets worse every year. Past time for him to retire, get fired. The Al Michaels of tennis. Overstayed.”
Another User wrote:
“Yep of course it’ll be Johnny Mac in the final… just because he had a better career than Courier and was known for his antics throughout. Such a joke that he still gets these big matches. He’s always bad on matches without the big names but this is disappointing man.”
Someone wrote:
“Genuinely staggering UK broadcasters keep making him front and centre. I get it with the US, it’s hard to move away from those huge names…but why is TNT (and Eurosport before it) gleefully putting McEnroe and Evert on the second week of RG instead of their much better commies??”
One user wrote:
“I can’t stand listening to McEnroe. Btw, Eugenie Bouchard retired 5 minutes ago from active play and she was EXCELLENT commentating this week.”
Another person wrote:
“John McEnroe is by far the worst commentator tennis has. He does zero research on the players. Doesnt even care to try and pronounce names correctly or know anything about the players. Just rambles nothings and points out the randomest things. Zero analysis, zero valuable input.”
McEnroe’s is part of the commentary team with TNT Sports at the French Open this year, alongside the likes of Eugenie Bouchard, Sloane Stephens and John Isner.
John McEnroe Talks About Björn Borg’s Craze for Being His Inspiration to Join Tennis
John McEnroe has been hailed as one of the greatest players of all time and has bagged several accolades, including seven Grand Slam singles titles. During an interview, while discussing his career at length, McEnroe highlighted how Björn Borg served as his ultimate motivation to commit to tennis, after watching Borg’s star power in public.
“I just remember vividly watching when I was 14 or 15, Borg was playing, one of the first times he played, and literally there was a locker room and they showed this on the evening news, there was 200 or 300 girls screaming at the top of their lungs, like it was beatlesmania for Borg, and I thought I wanna be a professional tennis player,” said McEnroe.
McEnroe is also a certified basketball fan and has made his plans clear on wanting to wrap up his Roland Garros schedule quickly to catch the next NBA Finals, where he could cheer on the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs.
