“Joao Fonseca Is Pathetic” – Fans Furious Over Brazilian’s Controversial Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner Comments After Miami Open Loss

Joao Fonseca lost to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday. The rising talent has been climbing the ATP rankings but still struggles with the consistency needed to beat top players in men’s tennis.

Previously, at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Fonseca challenged World No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the round of 16, which the Italian team won in two tough tiebreakers. During the post-match press conference in Miami, Fonseca made a surprising comparison of Sinner to a robot programmed to win matches, while describing Alcaraz as a well-rounded player.

“I think Alcaraz has more arsenal than Sinner. Sinner is more like a robot that just kills the ball and does everything perfectly. Carlos can do everything. He can do with topspin, fires the ball,  has good movement, and goes to the net. It’s more difficult to understand the game…” Fonseca said.

Fans who took note of the Brazilian’s comments were quick to share their reactions on X. Some lashed out at Fonseca for his hasty comparison of Alcaraz and Sinner, saying they couldn’t wait to see him face the Italian again.

“He’s pathetic. Let’s see how he does when he faces Sinner next time,” one fan commented.

“Sinner hits everything perfectly, that’s the truth. And when you meet him again, he’ll kick your a** again,” another fan commented.

“I will choose to give him the benefit of the doubt and say English is not his first language. Can’t wait for next match-up against Sinner,” yet another fan commented.

Some fans called out Fonseca for showing more humility as a rising star on the ATP circuit, while others noted that players are more straightforward in their comments these days.

“So we have Carlos comparing himself to Nadal and Fonseca comparing Sinner to a robot; these players sure are speaking their minds outright these days,” one fan commented.

“The boy already thought he was almost level with the top two in the world rankings, but he’s taken two slaps, and that hurts. He needs to revise his expectations, considering he hasn’t yet grasped the complexities of the game that Alcaraz and Sinner are capable of bringing to the court. A journey of humility is also necessary to perfect his arrogance,” another fan commented.

“Well, said the guy who is actually trying to replicate Sinner’s tennis,” yet another fan commented.

Joao Fonseca Yet to Make a Deep Run at an Event This Season

Joao Fonseca is yet to make an impactful run at an ATP event on tour this season. So far, Fonseca’s best run at a tournament has been to the round of 16, which he reached at the Rio Open and the Indian Wells Masters. While the teenager has shown streaks of potential in his game, he has yet to assert dominance on the court.

With the clock winding down on the Sunshine swing, the players will set their eyes on the clay-court swing next, which will culminate with the second Grand Slam of the year, Roland Garros in June. Fonseca is next scheduled to play in the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters, which commences on April 5.
