Iga Swiatek talked about privacy issues at the Australian Open, following her loss to Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Swiatek’s run at Melbourne Park ended on Wednesday with a 7-5, 6-1 loss at Rod Laver Arena.
Before Swiatek’s loss, talks about privacy came to the fore when, on Tuesday, Coco Gauff was captured smashing her racket away from the public eye following her disastrous quarterfinal loss against Elina Svitolina. Many believe such moments shouldn’t have been captured and circulated, as Gauff delibrated wanted to have that moment alone.
While talking with reporters, the issue of privacy came up when a reporter asked Swiatek about her view on Gauff’s issue, as well as her own, when she forgot her credentials and was denied entry into the arena.
“The question is, like… are we tennis players, or are we like animals in a zoo where they’re observed, like even when they poop, you know?” Swiatek asked, adding. “So, um, okay, that was exaggerating obviously, but it would be nice to have some privacy. It would be nice also to, I don’t know, have your own process and not always be, like, observed.”
Swiatek pointed out how both Wimbledon and Roland Garros have courts where only people with accredition are allowed instead of anyone with a ground pass.
“Like, um, I don’t know… at Wimbledon there are courts, like on Aorangi, where people with accreditation can get there, but it’s without the fans,” Swiatek said. “Um, at Roland Garros there’s Rambla. There are some spaces that you can at least go when you need to, you know? But there are some tournaments where it’s impossible, and you’re constantly, like, observed, if not by the fans, who can just buy some ground passes and go to your practice, then by the cameras.”
Iga Swiatek On Becoming Subject of Memes After Forgetting Credentials
When the No. 2 seed arrived at the Australian Open facilities earlier this morning, Iga Swiatek forgot to bring her credentials along. This is required for anyone trying to access restricted player areas at Melbourne Park.
As she didn’t have her badge on her, security stopped her at the checkpoint and the moment was captured on camera for broadcasters to show. Swiatek called her team to bring her badge and after a one to two minute hold up, she was given access. Fans online circulated this video widely and criticized the Polish star.
Swiatek didn’t seem too happy about it as she said in the press conference:
“It’s not our job to, like, be a meme when you forget your accreditation. And it’s funny, yeah, for sure. Like, people have something to talk about, but for us, like, I don’t think it’s necessary.”
Swiatek and Gauff were two notable quarterfinal exits in two days as the Australian Open never forgets to give way to such stunning defeats.
