Jessica Pegula’s run at the Berlin Open ended in disappointment as she fell short in the final. Following the defeat, she shared a message for her father, Terry Pegula, apologizing for not being able to win the title as a Father’s Day gift.
Pegula progressed to the final of the Berlin Championships after recording impressive wins over top players, including Madison Keys, Aryna Sabalenka, and more. She met Linda Noskova in the final, who produced a strong performance to win the first and third sets to claim a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory, ending the American’s bid for the trophy.
During the trophy ceremony, Pegula reflected on the loss and praised her opponent’s performance. She also issued a light-hearted apology to her father, billionaire businessman and owner of the Buffalo Bills, for not being able to bring home the trophy as a Father’s Day gift.
“First of all I’d like to congratulate Linda today. You played amazing. You’re a great player, a great talent. Still so young. I always love watching you play. You’re an amazing player and super talented. Congrats to you and your team. It’s Father’s Day back home… sorry to my dad. I couldn’t get it done. But hopefully it was still a decent Father’s Day for you,” said Jessica Pegula.
Jessica Pegula opened up about her loss at the Berlin Championships
After losing to Linda Noskova in the Berlin Championships final, Jessica Pegula reflected on the defeat during the trophy ceremony. Despite falling short of the title, the American said she was pleased with her performance. Thanking her coach, her entire team, and husband for their support, she said:
“I’d like to thank my coach in the box. Mark, thanks for all the help this week. We’ve done pretty, pretty well here in Berlin. Didn’t get to get the title today, but considering where we were like a couple of weeks ago, I think it was pretty good. So thank you so much for all your help. Thanks to Daniel also for hitting with me all week. You’ve been great. And yeah, I’ve hit with you a lot, so it’s always nice to see you here this week. Yeah, give it up for Daniel. He’s right there,” said Jessica Pegula.
She added:
“And then obviously to everyone back home, my other coach who’s also named Mark as well. I know that you’re watching, my trainer john, my physio who’s not here, my husband Taylor, and all my friends and family.”
Jessica Pegula is now expected to compete at Wimbledon, which is slated for June 29 to July 12.
