Ben Shelton recently joked about his compatriot, Frances Tiafoe. They are the top two seeds at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship (Houston Open), which started on Monday. Both players share a good rapport off the court but stay highly competitive on it.
The reigning Dallas Open champion, Shelton, began his run in Houston with a straight-set win against Zhang Zhizhen in the round of 16 on Wednesday. After the win, Shelton gave a brief post-match interview to Tennis Channel.
After reflecting on his match against Zhizhen, the World No. 9 was asked about his off day in Houston. The presenters mentioned that Tommy Paul went fishing and Tiafoe attended a Rockets game during their off days.
“I haven’t gotten out like those other guys. Actually, I asked Frances at practice yesterday if he was going to the Rockets game, and he said no. So, he is a snake. But other than that, I will be chilling,” Shelton said.
Tiafoe advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event after defeating Rinky Hijikata in their round of 16 match on Thursday night. Tiafoe was made to work hard for the win by the Australian, as the match went into the decider.
Ben Shelton And Frances Tiafoe Are on a Potential Collision Course for the Houston Open Final
Both Shelton and Tiafoe will headline the quarterfinals of the Houston Open, as the top two seeds are on a potential collision course in the summit clash. Shelton will face Thiago Agustin Tirante in the quarterfinals on Friday, while Tiafoe will square off against the winner of the R16 match between Alex Michelsen and Alexei Popyrin.
Shelton could face Learner Tien in the semifinals, and Tiafoe could set up an SF clash with Tommy Paul. They will advance to the Houston Open final if they win their respective matches. After Houston, Tiafoe will travel to Monaco for the Monte Carlo Masters, while Shelton will skip Monte Carlo and resume play in Munich from April 13 onwards.
