Felix Auger-Aliassime endured a disappointing outing at the 2026 Hamburg Open, falling to World No. 94 Alex Kovacevic in a match that has left fans frustrated.

Auger-Aliassime arrived in Hamburg on the back of a second-round exit at the Madrid Open but began his campaign strongly with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Vit Kopriva. However, things unraveled in his next match as he failed to get past Kovacevic despite entering the tournament as the top seed.

The Canadian made the brighter start, securing the opening set with a crucial break in the final game while keeping his unforced errors to a minimum. But his level dipped noticeably afterward, allowing Kovacevic to capitalize. The American stayed composed in key moments, converting break points efficiently and forcing a decider. Auger-Aliassime appeared to regain control early in the third set, racing to a 4-1 lead, but couldn’t hold on. Kovacevic produced a stunning turnaround, winning five consecutive games to seal a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory in two hours and 21 minutes, marking his first-ever win over a top-five player.

Fans have now taken to social media platform Reddit to vent their frustration over Auger-Aliassime’s inconsistent form, with one user writing:

“Worst top 10 ever by a country mile how on earth does Felix disappear for 70% of every season and stay in the top 5 lol. Come to think of it Djokovic also disappears for 70% of the year but in a different way.”

“Literally ANYONE can beat Faa on clay. Hope fils gets drawn in his quarter at the French Open,” another wrote.

“FAA is mostly a dud outside of indoor hardcourt, grass and some outdoor hardcourt tourneys. A few months ago he looked dangerous now not so much on clay. Hopefully grass season will be better,” one account posted.

“I get that its the week before the FO and FAA prob doesnt care and doesnt want too exert too much energy, but losing to kovacevic as a top 5 player is a bad look,” one user tweeted.

“The FAA hype should end right here, right now,” one fan commented.

“ATP results going absolutely crazy in the last hour lmao,” another joined in.

Alex Kovasevic Makes Feelings Clear After Upsetting Felix Auger-Aliassime At Hamburg Open

Alex Kovasevic made his feelings clear about what he was feeling right after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime. This was the biggest win of the American’s career, but unaware of that milestone, he was instead relieved to see a close contest finally fall his way as he advanced to his ninth ATP Tour quarter-final.

    Kovasevic told the reporters:

“I wasn’t even aware. It’s a good thing I wasn’t, because maybe I would’ve been a bit more nervous out here. I’ve had a lot of tough losses, where the pendulum has just swung the wrong way for me, even a couple of weeks ago in Rome.”

“It was just big for me to come through a match like this, especially being a break down in the third, just to get back on the right track. [Auger-Aliassime] an amazing player. I’ve been watching him since I was young, even though he’s younger than me… He’s been killing it,” he added.

Next up for Alex Kovacevic is a third-round clash against Camilo Ugo Carabelli at the Hamburg Open, while Felix Auger-Aliassime will now begin his preparations for the upcoming French Open.
