Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled massively in 2025. Starting the year at No. 11, the Greek star was outside the top 30 by the end of the season after a string of disappointing exits. In between the seasons, Tsitsipas brought in Novak Djokovic’s former coach, Goran Ivanisevic, but the relationship lasted less than two months. He replaced Ivanisevic with his father, Apostolos, once again.
Recently, speaking on SportKlub, Ivanisevic shared his thoughts on his relationship with the Greek professional. He shared that Tsitsipas had mental issues, leading the head coach to suggest the tennis star take a break from tennis.
“I knew after the second day of training,” Ivanisevic said. “When he came to Zagreb to try rackets, I understood that it wouldn’t work out. In the end, I didn’t say anything bad; everything I stated was true and proved to be so. After Wimbledon, I advised him to take four months off because it wasn’t just a physical issue but also mental. He remains a phenomenal player, he was and still is, but those are just details. In today’s tennis, you can’t compete without being mentally prepared.
“I had similar problems myself when I dropped to 128th place in the rankings. In any case, everything is fine. We met in Doha and greeted each other normally. The issue was exaggerated; he said some things that we won’t delve into, but everything is in order and we move forward.”
After the shocking mental health revealation, fans were unkind towards the head coach for revealing such detail.
“He’s so horrible as a person. Zero tact, zero decorum. For a grown up like him, it’s quite shocking. And i do not like Tsitsipas even a lil bit to defend him,” one fan reacted.
“It’s not his issue though? Many players have issues. Shameful of Ivanisevic to break Stefs trust. This is highly inappropriate. Breaking someone’s privacy like that,” one fan commented.
“Ugly things so say as an ex coach, even if it was just a couple of weeks. Low character or IQ or both from Ivanisevic,” one fan wrote.
“Like this guy but he should not be running his mouth while Tsitsipas still playing. Maybe in 20 years in tell all book. But not right now,” another added.
“Why is he still talking about him like that? Weird af,” one fan asked.
“He’s right. But I don’t know how many more gigs he’s gonna get if he keeps sharing every player’s dirty laundry,” one fan added.
Stefanos Tsitsipas Goes Down Against Arthur Fils in Miami
In the Round of 32 match in the Miami Open, Arthur Fils defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0, 6-1. The match lasted less than an hour, marking one of the most lopsided losses in his career. Tsitsipas struggled on serve and made multiple errors.
This follows his first-round exit at the Indian Wells Masters as the former World No. 3 went down against Denis Shapovalov.
It remains to be seen if Tsitsipas manage the downward turn in performance in the clay season.
