What Did Emma Raducanu Really Say About Coaches? Inside Brit’s Comments At Indian Wells That Have Sparked Fan Backlash

Emma Raducanu recently reacted to the constant criticism she faces amid frequent coach changes, Francisco Roig being the latest after her second-round exit at the 2026 Australian Open. However, fans online were far from impressed with her latest comments, with the majority saying she was being unreasonable.

Ahead of her opening match at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Raducanu, who recently reunited with coach Mark Petchey, told BBC Sport:

“I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn’t necessarily fit. I would love to have a coach that works well, but I don’t think it’s necessarily going to be easy to find one person and they are going to check every box. I definitely have my mind open to it. It’s just that I would rather someone not come in and tell me ‘let’s do this,’ and I disagree with it, but have to listen to them.”

Fans slammed the Brit, with some even calling her lone Grand Slam victory at the 2021 US Open a “fluke.”

“Think Emma is confused about what a coach should do. They are not just a cheerleader, you are meant to listen to them & work together as a common goal,” a fan wrote.

“I wonder if she tells the medics and physios how to treat her injuries as well? Because Emma knows everything,” added another.

“Lmao… so lemme get this straight… Rafa, Fed and Novak all had coaches for over a decade that worked with them on their style of play (among other things) and Emma thinks she’s too good for that? She’s not a serious player,” a user commented.

“For someone who has won just one fluke Grand Slam, she surely has a lot of attitude & arrogance,” another chimed in.

“Is she an only child? I genuinely don’t know but this attitude is not an elite sports mentality. Reeks of being mollycoddled her whole life,” a fan wrote.

“Emma acting like she don’t need coaching when she’s burned through 10 coaches and sitting at 24 lmao maybe let someone tell you how to play for once… prove me wrong this week,” another fan said.

The Brit reached her career’s second final at the WTA 250 Transylvania Open last month, though she lost. The 2021 US Open remains the only title in her cabinet.

Former Player Urges Emma Raducanu to Hire a Female Coach

Former tennis player Naomi Cavaday hopes that Emma Raducanu, for the first time, works with a female coach soon.

    Speaking to Tennis365, Cavaday said:

“I think it would be great [Raducanu working with a female coach]. The expertise of someone who has worked in the women’s game would help her and maybe that is something someone like Francisco [Roig] didn’t have.”

“I think a lot of the former female players would like to work in the game, but very few of them are coaching. It’s very scarce. Conchita Martínez is doing a great job [with Mirra Andreeva], and Nathalie Tauziat has done a great work with Victoria Mboko, but maybe some of the ex-players are not being asked,” she added.

Emma Raducanu will begin her campaign at Indian Wells against qualifier Anastasia Zakharova in the second round on Friday, March 6.
