Emma Navarro returned to action at the Italian Open after a two-month break, but the focus of many fans was not on her performance but on her appearance.
Navarro last competed in Austin before taking a break due to undisclosed health concerns. She returned to the court at the Italian Open and opened against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. However, the American was sent packing in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
One topic of discussion on social media was Navarro’s alleged weight gain, but it did not sit well with some fans online. Many defended Navarro and sympathized with her situation.
“I don’t even care about Navarro but can people be normal about women?” wrote one fan.
“Just went through Emma Navarro mentions, hope she stays off Twitter tonight for her own mental health😭” wrote another.
Some of the comments are truly disgusting. She’s going through health issues and even if she wasn’t, there’s no excuse to fat shame people,” another commented.
“I’ve blocked and reported many tweets/users for slandering Navarro. Don’t stay indifferent to vulgar nasty assholes,” tweeted another.
“I hope she stays off social media. It had to be hard to come back knowing how we would all be shocked and wondering what is going on, this is about meds she took for her health issues has to be,” chimed in another.
“Shit people who may not know what Emma is going through,” commented another fan.
Navarro has experienced a rough start to the 2026 season, posting a 4-9 record so far.
What did Emma Navarro say about her health struggles?
After competing in Austin in March, Emma Navarro withdrew from the Miami Open and Charleston Open. She revealed that she had been dealing with health problems, but did not disclose what they were.
“Unfortunately, I have been dealing with some health struggles over the past year or so that I am continuing to sort out. I am working closely with my doctors and team to feel the best I can, but I just a need a bit more time in doing so,” said Navarro.
