Coco Gauff will take on Iga Swiatek in the semifinals of the 2026 United Cup on Saturday, her biggest challenge of the season yet. Danielle Collins, for one, believes her fellow American has what it takes to beat the World No. 2, for a rather interesting reason.
Swiatek and Gauff both won their quarterfinal battles at the United Cup with relative ease, setting up a tasty encounter Down Under. While Gauff has one loss to her name in the tournament, against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Swiatek is unbeaten so far.
Their head-to-head is now 11-4 in favor of the Pole. However, recent match-ups have been Gauff heavy, with the American having won their last three showdowns on the trot in straight sets.
Speaking as a pundit on the Tennis Channel previewing their United Cup square-off, Danielle Collins is confident Gauff has the edge, citing the team environment she thrives in. At the same time, the former Australian Open runner-up urged caution about Swiatek’s current red-hot form.
“I think it’s tough. In these team settings, Coco has so much fun, being on the team with all these players, and the camaraderie. I think it gives her a little bit extra motivation to stick it to her, and [Iga Swiatek] is a player she wants to beat, to take the win over. I think definitely Coco has a pretty good chance. But with the way Iga has been playing, she is dangerous. It is going to be a good match,” Collins said.
Also on the panel, former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport believes that it will be a very even match-up between Gauff and Swiatek, especially in the hot conditions in Sydney.
“In these hot conditions, it is really going to be who can control their shots in 100 degree weather. Gauff is going to need her moment, and be able to defend well. Iga is going to have to find her forehand, it has been missing against Coco in the last few match-ups,” Davenport said.
What Iga Swiatek said before her battle with Coco Gauff at the United Cup
Iga Swiatek shared her thoughts on the battle with Coco Gauff in her press conference at the United Cup.
Having lost to Gauff in the final of the tournament last year (Poland went down to USA as well), Swiatek promised to look into the tactical aspect of the game with her coach Wim Fissette and make the necessary adjustments.
“We played so many matches with Coco that I don’t really, like, look at the previous ones so much. Like if I would have to do that every time, I would be thinking for a long time because we played many matches against each other.”
“For sure I’m going to sit with Wim tomorrow and he will watch it and he will give me the tips,” Swiatek added.
In the other United Cup semifinal, Switzerland is taking on Belgium. Belinda Bencic beat Elise Mertens in the first singles tie to give the Swiss team a 1-0 lead.
