Controversial Jannik Sinner vs Eliot Spizzirri Battle: All The Burning Questions Answered After Australian Open Blockbuster

Jannik Sinner defeated America’s Eliot Spizzirri in the third round match at the Australian Open. When the American won the first set, it soon started trending for a lot of reasons, including drama, extreme heat, controversy, and ultimately a thrilling turning point.

There are several questions on the minds of fans that we’ll address in this article.

How Did Eliot Spizzirri Break Jannik Sinner’s Invincibility Streak?

Coming into this matchup, Jannik Sinner was holding a 27-set winning streak since October. However, by the time the first set of the third round clash came to a close, Sinner’s streak was ended as Eliot Spizzirri won the first set 6-4.

The American broke Sinner’s serve to take a 5-4 lead in the set. Given Spizzirri had no prior head-to-head with Sinner, the Italian had little idea about his game, and therefore, it turned out to be a tactical advantage for Spizzirri.

    Is Jannik Sinner Injured?

After the first set loss, the heat started to catch up to Sinner as the Italian battled hard with his cramps. Other than that, there was no prior injury to Sinner entering this matchup.

What Happened When Jannik Sinner Was Given a Time Violation?

Early in the second set, Jannik Sinner was given a time violation as he battled extreme, 36°C (97°F) heat. Sinner, coming after a long rally, questioned the chair umpire, noting that neither the shouts from the crowd came to a close nor his opponent were ready to receive the serve.

Showing sportsmanship spirit, Eliot Spizzirri requested the chair umpire to disregard the violation, claiming he was not ready to receive the serve.

    Why Match Was Suspended Temporily?

Eventually, tied at one apiece in the third set, the match was suspended. Temperatures soared above 38 °C (100 °F), triggering the Australian Open’s Extreme Heat Policy. The heat index reached 5, which meant that the roof had to be closed.

It was a fortunate break for Jannik Sinner since he got the time to recover from cramps while the roof was being shut down.

Was Eliot Spizzirri unhappy with Match Suspension?

Meanwhile, Spizzirri was not happy about this, knowing he had Sinner on the ropes. His discontent with the same proved to be right as after the break, the Italian recovered well to initiate a break and take the third set.

How Did Jannik Sinner Find A Way to Win After Cramps?

Despite losing the first set and battling extreme heat and cramps, Sinner used the stoppage in play to recover and get in the right mindset.

During the break, Sinner received cooling and medical attention. Once play resumed, his serve and movement improved significantly. Not only did he claw back in the third set, but even in the fourth, he didn’t drop a single game and eventually won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
