Coco Gauff playfully trolled Taylor Fritz following Team USA’s 2-1 win in the 2026 United Cup quarterfinal tie against Greece. Gauff helped the Americans establish a 1-0 lead in the tie courtesy her women’s singles win over Maria Sakkari. However, Fritz’s loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next match took the tie to a decisive mixed doubles encounter, in which Gauff, partnering Christian Harrison, surprisingly received advice from Fritz.
Gauff and Harrison didn’t get off to the best of starts, as Sakkari and Tsitsipas edged the first set of the crucial mixed doubles clash 6-4. However, the Americans regrouped and took the match to a third-set tiebreak after clinching the second set 6-4. During the tiebreak, Fritz, who is more noted for his singles tennis prowess, advised his compatriots on how to go about their business on the court.
Speaking to reporters at a post-match press conference, the World No. 4 in women’s singles tennis playfully trolled the ATP No. 9, saying:
“I think it was a team effort, especially in the tiebreaker. I never thought I would get doubles advice from Taylor, but it was actually successful. I appreciate it.”
The two-time singles Major champion went on to share her thoughts on the nerve-racking nature of the tiebreak, adding:
“I think in those moments it’s important because literally in tiebreaks every point matters more so than maybe in a three-set format. Yeah, it definitely came down to the wire. So, yeah, I appreciate the whole team talking to us, pumping us up, and seeing things that maybe we couldn’t see on the court.”
Australia or Poland awaits Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz and rest of Team USA in United Cup SF
The winner of the quarterfinal tie between Australia and Poland will go on to face USA in the last four of the 2026 United Cup. In the same press conference, Gauff was asked about her thoughts on potentially facing either Poland’s Iga Swiatek or Australia’s Maya Joint in the semifinals. Remembering her win over Swiatek in the final of the previous edition of the United Cup, Gauff said:
“I’ll start with Iga. I mean, obviously we’ve played each other a lot of times. Last year I had a good match against her. Yeah, I’m looking forward to the battle. I feel like when I’m playing great tennis, it puts a lot of pressure on them. Yeah, I’m looking forward to that.”
The 21-year-old, going on to speak up about locking horns with Joint in what would be a first-ever competitive meeting between the pair, added:
“And Maya, I’ve never played her, but obviously a great talent, can play really well, ball strike can be really clean. Either way, I’ll have my hands full, but I’m just excited to go to Sydney and hopefully play some good tennis.”
In the final of last year’s United Cup, Gauff defeated Swiatek and Fritz dealt a loss to Hubert Hurkacz to bag the title for the USA.
