Why Did Coco Gauff Retire In Indian Wells 3R Vs Alexandra Eala Today? American’s Rare Injury Decision & Timeout Explained

Coco Gauff’s BNP Paribas Open 2026 campaign at Indian Wells came to an abrupt end in the third round due to an injury. Fans were excited to witness another showdown between the American and Alexandra Eala on Sunday, March 8.

However, Gauff looked a little off right from the start. She struggled with a left arm issue, and even called for a medical timeout before the penultimate game of the first set. After a quick check-up, she decided to soldier on for the time being.

Gauff lost the opening set soon after the timeout. She quickly realized the severity of the issue and chose to exercise caution in order to avoid aggravating the injury even further. After going down 0-2 in the second set, she ultimately threw in the towel.

This marked just the second mid-match retirement of Gauff’s career. The only other occasion when she was unable to finish a match prior to this was at the Cincinnati Open 2022. She rolled her ankle during her first-round match against Marie Bouzkova back then, forcing her to call it quits. Her current injury could now put her at risk of missing out on the next WTA 1000 in Miami.

Coco Gauff To Potentially Miss The Miami Open 2026

Coco Gauff’s unexpected injury at the BNP Paribas Open 2026 could force her to skip the upcoming Miami Open as well. The season’s fourth WTA 1000 tournament will take place from March 17-29.

Gauff’s retirement from her third-round match at Indian Wells could have big ranking implications. She’s currently ranked fourth, with fellow Americans Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova right behind her at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. Both are still competing at Indian Wells, and could surpass Gauff with a deep run at the tournament.

The Miami Open will also be Gauff’s last opportunity to gain some ranking points. She’s defending close to 3,400 points during the clay swing, nearly half of her current ranking tally. If she is unable to compete in Miami, then she will be under added pressure to perform well every week during the clay swing in order to maintain her current position in the WTA rankings.
