Former ATP pro Steve Johnson shared his honest opinion on World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz’s surprising loss to Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday. The Spaniard, who has already won two titles this year, struggled during the Sunshine Swing, losing to Korda in Miami after falling to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters last week.
Johnson’s thoughts on the matter came during the latest episode of the Nothing Major podcast. The former American player delivered a warning about the Spaniard, saying that Alcaraz might be involved in too many extracurricular activities off the court and that he should try to reignite his inner fire before the upcoming clay-court season.
“Alcaraz didn’t seem like himself yesterday… So maybe it’s just, maybe there are too many extracurriculars. I don’t know, like during Indian Wells, Miami, I know he was playing golf every day. Look, I love the fact that he’s playing golf every day, but it’s a long stretch. These couple of weeks, there’s a lot to do,” Johnson said.
“So, now he’s got to find a way to rekindle that fire. Maybe there’s something to look forward to, because that was a huge milestone for him. And he’s maybe lost the, the slightest little edge, maybe a percentage pointer here, for these smaller events,” he added.
“So for him, there’s nothing to panic about, but he’s just got to find something to go out there and find the joy and compete again. Cause this was not his best sunshine double,” Johnson concluded.
Carlos Alcaraz is Prioritizing Going Back Home To His Family Before Monte-Carlo Masters
After his Miami Open exit, Carlos Alcaraz addressed the media, where he was asked about his next course of action before heading to the Monte Carlo Masters, starting April 5. The Spaniard stated that he was prioritizing going back home to spend some time with family before the clay-court swing commences.
“I don’t know. Probably I’m going to go back home… I’m looking forward to staying and chilling with my family and my friends for a couple of days. I don’t know how much my team is going to allow me to have rest and a day off,” Alcaraz said.
“All of a sudden, just go back on track, go back on the court. The clay season is around the corner. I just have really good tournaments that I’m excited to play in. Yeah, my mind right now is to take some days off, to reset my mind, reset the batteries, and be ready and in good shape for the clay season,” he added.
The Spaniard will aim to regroup himself and bounce back from the Sunshine swing debacle by defending his Masters title in Monte Carlo next month.
