Andy Roddick is the latest to weigh in on the ongoing online feud between former pro Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. The issue between Tsonga and Mouratoglou had flared up on January 2, when the French coach responded to the former World No. 5’s earlier comments from an interview in October 2025.
Now the former US Open champion, Roddick, has reacted to the issue in the latest episode of the “Served with Andy Roddick” podcast. Roddick delivered clear-headed remarks, criticizing both Frenchmen for their poorly timed comments and intensifying the situation.
The American addressed the issue and expressed hope that the pair could resolve matters amicably.
Roddick said:
“Jo [Wilfried Tsonga], I don’t know that he likes to be in these public fights, and I think that Patrick [Mouratoglou] doesn’t mind them at all. [Tsonga] five in the world, Grand Slam finalist, played a bunch of big matches, beaten all of the Big 3. As a coach [Mouratoglou], I think it’s dangerous to discredit a career like that flippantly.”
Roddick added that being coached by someone who casually criticizes top players could be difficult for lower-ranked players. He referred to this as a slippery slope when trying to build confidence. Roddick went on to disagree with some of what Tsonga had to say, but ultimately hinted that Mouratoglou could have handled the situation better from the onset.
“Jo saying, you’ve never [played], I do a show with Jon Wertheim, he’s never played pro tennis, I think he has a lot of great opinions, and provides context, and where we see it from is very different,” said the American.“I think there is a lot of space for that. But there’s no chance that Jon would sit here and be dismissive about anyone ranked five in the world, or had the career that Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had,” he added.“I think that’s dangerous when you don’t have the player pedigree to fall back on. I’m not saying you can’t have an opinion, but you shouldn’t be condescending when you don’t exactly know what it’s like. That rubbed me the wrong way a little bit,” Roddick concluded.
What Was the Beef Between Mouratoglou and Tsonga to Which Andy Roddick Reacted in His Podcast?
Tsonga sparked the issue in an exclusive Univers Tennis interview in October 2025, saying that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominate men’s tennis only because they play in a weaker era and that there is a lack of competition.
In a fiery response to these comments, Mouratoglou initially disagreed, saying that today’s players on the ATP circuit are equally competitive. He later added that Tsonga couldn’t have beaten these players in his prime, which lasted only a season.
Tsonga didn’t hold back from rebutting the French coach’s criticism and clapped back, saying:
“You’ll remain just a coach, and you will never have felt what it’s like to be a tennis player.”
Looking ahead, whether the French duo will resolve their issues remains uncertain. Tsonga’s earlier statement suggested a willingness to resolve the issue respectfully, as he noted his respect for Mouratoglou and openness to a private conversation rather than resorting to public exchanges on social media.
