Andre Agassi and Grigor Dimitrov have known each other since the latter was a junior in tennis (14YO). The relationship between the two expanded around the 2018 Paris Masters when Agassi joined Dimitrov’s coaching team.
On Wednesday, after Dimitrov defeated Tomáš Macháč in the first round of the Australian Open, he received love from the eight-time Grand Slam champion. Agassi posted a nostalgic photo from a tennis court where both stars were shirtless, with Dimitrov holding a tennis racket. It appears that both were involved in an intense session. He also added their current picture together in which they are wearing t-shirts, an improvement they made in their lifestyle over the years, joked Agassi in the caption.
“Then vs. now @grigordimitrov… Luckily we learned how to wear shirts! Love ya g keep pushing!” Agassi wrote.
Agassi is in Melbourne for the opening ceremony of the Australian Open, where he played exhibition matches with 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and other tennis legends.
Grigor Dimitrov Describes Relationship With Andre Agassi
Back in 2018, Andre Agassi joined Grigor Dimitrov’s coaching team as a mentor alongside coach Dani Vallverdu. Coming off a straight-set win against Yashioto Nishioka at the Brisbane International, the Bulgarian opened up about his relationship with the American tennis legend.
“We are all very happy in the team that Andre is with us,” Dimitrov said via Tennis 365. “He’s more than a friend to me, it’s a special relationship. There is just a huge appreciation and I am very humbled to have him by my side. Hopefully, things will go well on the court for us.”
Moreover, one year later, after Dimitrov defeated former world No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic 4-6 6-3 6-1 6-4, the Bulgarian explained about his relationship with Agassi.
“At some point last year, I think mid through the year, me and Dani sat down to talk about our goals, objectives, and so on. I have known Andre for a really long time, since I was 14 I have spent some time with him back in the past, in Vegas. And we just wanted to kind of add a person that has done a little bit of, I mean, of what we are trying to achieve, you know,” Dimitrov said.
“There was one person that I could trust unconditionally, and that was him. So we spoke with Dani and ultimately both of us kind of reached out and just, yeah, seek for a little bit of help. Step by step, we developed our relationship and next thing you know he’s in here watching my first match.”
Dimitrov also shared that the relationship between Agassi is not limited to the tennis court and is open to talking about anything with each other.
