Andre Agassi recently weighed in on Serena Williams’ comeback, opening up about why he never chose the path of making a comeback to tennis after his retirement. Williams returned to the sport after a hiatus of almost four years.
Agassi retired from professional tennis in September, 2006, after an emotional final match of the US Open against Benjamin Becker. He enjoyed an illustrious career of 21 years, turning pro at the age of 16 and retiring at the age of 36. He bagged 8 Grand Slam singles titles and 60 ATP singles titles and also won the men’s singles gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
He is now working as a tennis studio analyst for TNT Sports, coaching the Laver Cup’s Team World, and also mentoring the rising ATP players. He recently appeared for a conversation at the Tennis Channel, where he spoke about Serena Williams’ comeback, who retired in 2022 after competing at the US Open and has now made a comeback to the sport. Calling it a win for the American, he said:
“I’ll tell you what would be successful for Serena, that she’s living her best life, and if she wants to be on that tennis court, God bless her. But it wouldn’t matter to me the result for her on any level except her own best self. And if she’s out there with a true desire to play, like that’s a win for the sport,” said Andre Agassi.
While speaking about her, he was also asked if he ever thought of returning to tennis. Responding to this, he said:
“No. No, I never wanted to quit. I wanted to retire, meaning I wanted to have no regret. I wanted to know I left it all out there. I wanted to know I had nothing left. She did it all and she did it over a very long period of time. But if she wants to challenge herself, let her test herself in a new way, in a new era, and a new time frame, and a new chapter in her life. If that’s what she wants, I mean, I’ll be pulling for her.”
Where will Serena Williams compete first after her comeback to tennis?
After months of anticipation and speculations all over the internet about Serena Williams’ comeback, the news was finally confirmed by the American recently on social media. She posted a video of herself on the tennis court in collaboration with Nike, revealing her return to tennis. Her first tournament after her comeback is the HSBC Championships, as the officials confirmed her appearance on X.
