Sloane Stephens has reportedly withdrawn her name from the Merida Open due to personal reasons. Stephens was scheduled to face Renata Zarazúa in the opening round of the WTA 500 event in Mérida, Mexico. She exited both the doubles and singles draws.
The news comes just a few days after she announced her separation from Jozy Altidore, marking an end to the marriage after about four years.
On Feb. 21, Stephens released a statement on the same on her Instagram stories:
“Jozy and I have decided to end our marriage,” Stephens wrote. “With peace, I am navigating this transition with mutual respect and kindly ask for privacy during this time. Thank you for your love, understanding and continued support.”
Sloane Stephens Met As Kids Before Crossing Paths Again in 2016
Stephens and Altidore first met in childhood. They both went to Boca Prep International School. Stephens was in fifth grade while Altidore was two levels above her.
The two reconnected in 2016 when they crossed paths at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
“I was doing a media scrum in the hallway during a U.S. Men’s National team camp. Sloane was there training for Fed Cup in Hawaii,” Altidore once told Vogue. “Sloane turned the corner while having a loud conversation on FaceTime. We locked eyes and started talking during the scrum… We exchanged contacts and went to dinner after my game versus Iceland. The rest was history.”
Altidore popped the question to Stephens in Los Angeles in April 2019. He surprised the 2017 US Open champion with an art gallery “filled with her family and friends.”
“Instead of paintings, the gallery was decorated with massive canvases of photos from our relationship and all the people who have played a role in Sloane’s life up to this point,” he told Vogue.
The two later announced their engagement on Instagram with Stephens writing:
“Forever yes ❤️.”
Less than three years later, they got married on New Year’s Day in 2022 in Miami Beach, Florida. Altidore has a son from his previous relationship. The fatherly bond of Altidore was adored by Stephens as she said:
“Loves his son so much and gives so selflessly.”
“Jozy and I have known each other since we were kids, but watching him grow as a father showed me what it would be like to spend forever with him,” she continued.
After four years, their marriage has fallen apart.
