An alleged leaked audio clip circulating in college football circles has placed Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft at the center of a storm. In the clip, Kraft allegedly spoke bluntly about why top recruits keep backing away from the Nittany Lions, pointing to geography.
He also described the program’s isolation and how that pushes top recruits toward destinations with more energy, opportunities and life around the campus.
This year has already seen several high-profile prospects step back from their pledges. Some flipped late in the cycle, while others reopened their recruitment entirely.
On Thursday, Dead Air Sports leaked audio of an alleged meeting between Kraft and Nittany Lions players in which he addressed various issues, including recruitment and coaching.
“Our fans, our people don’t understand. It’s a challenge,” KRAFT can be heard saying in the alleged leaked audio. “what am I going to do? And to be honest with you, like that’s why a lot of people de committed because you’re telling me that…I’m getting recruited from Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, places that are big and have like things around it and then I have to come here and be in the middle of nowhere and be like far away from it like anything.” (From 8:30)
Pat Kraft Is Yet to Find James Franklin’s Replacement
The Nittany Lions are still without a permanent head coach. Penn State fired James Franklin on October 12 after a third straight loss. Terry Smith stepped in as the interim coach, but no long-term successor has been named weeks later.
The coaching search has dragged on through multiple recruiting windows. Kraft has explored candidates across the Power Five landscape, yet none have agreed to take over.
Several coaches have turned down conversations or removed themselves from contention. Others signed extensions elsewhere, leaving Penn State scrambling.
With recruits decommitting and no progress on the head coaching front, Penn State finds itself in a precarious position.
