With just two athletes and one unforgettable look, the Haitian team is winning the spotlight at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Haiti will send Richardson Viano and Stevenson Savart to the upcoming Winter Olympics, who will be seen donning outfits customized by Italian-Haitian designer Stella Jean.
Jean drew inspiration from a painting of Louverture astride, featuring a red horse by Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrié. Before the Louverture astride painting, the outfits featured independence leader Toussaint Louverture. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ordered the removal of the image of Toussaint Louverture, citing the rules that barred political symbolism and political, religious, or racial propaganda at Olympic Games. Toussaint Louverture was a slave who led a revolution that led to the world’s first Black republic in 1804.
After the IOC ordered the removal of the previous image, Jean appointed Italian artisans to paint over the image with the red horse. She also designed the women’s outfit, adding gold hoop earrings and a Haitian tignon, or turban. Jean also designed the uniforms of Haiti’s team at the 2024 Paris Games.

Viano will represent Haiti in the skiing events at the upcoming Winter Games. He made history by becoming the first Winter Olympian from the country at the 2022 Beijing Games, where he secured 34th place in the men’s slalom. He competed for France before the Haitian Ski Federation approached him. He will be accompanied by 25-year-old Stevenson Savart, who will become the country’s first Olympic cross-country skier.
