Tennis legend Serena Williams has set ablaze the lawns of the Andy Murray Arena with her comeback win at the Queen’s Club tournament’s opening round, and adding to the excitement was Olympian Lindsey Vonn, who cheered on for Williams from courtside. The alpine ski racer was one among many who had lined up at the arena to witness the legend back in action, where 44-year-old Williams proved that she had not yet lost any of her high-powered dominance on the court.
The return of Serena Williams has caught the imagination of the tennis world for the last month or so. After much speculation, the American legend finally stepped onto court on Tuesday alongside her partner Victoria Mboko, and beat Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-2.
The arena was packed with a sold-out crowd, all of whom were cheering for the returning legend. On the courtside, there was Williams’ family: husband Alexis Ohanian, alongside their two daughters, Olympia and Adira, as well as Williams’ longtime friend Lindsey Vonn. Vonn and Williams have long admired each other, with Vonn even defending Williams sporadically during past controversies.
Vonn stood by the courtside and grabbed a mic to send a shout-out to the competing legend, saying the following:
“Hey, Serena. Congratulations. So proud of you. The GOAT is back.”
Both Williams and Vonn are considered legends in their respective sports and have made comebacks that truly mattered. Like Williams, Vonn too had returned to competitive skiing in November 2024 after being away from the sport for five years.
Serena Williams Talks About Playing Alongside Victoria Mboko
During the post-match interview after her first-round win at the Queen’s Club Championships, Williams spoke about feeling natural while swinging alongside Mboko, saying:
“I had so much fun playing with Vicky. She was really able to hold up the team and play big on the big points, and I could really rely on her, and we’ve never played together, but it felt so natural playing with her, so it was actually really fun,” she said (0:24).
The pair will next take on the duo of Laura Siegemund and Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinals.
