Elaine Thompson-Herah recently made her feelings known about the sensitive topic of therapy, stating that she doesn’t believe in it. Her comments drew mixed reactions from fans, some taking a dig at her for sending a wrong message and some respecting her opinion.
Thompson-Herah opened her 2026 season on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Camperdown Classics in Kingston, Jamaica. She ran in the 60m dash, where she secured a third-place finish, clocking 7.24 seconds. This was her first race in 18 months following a lengthy recovery from an Achilles injury that made her withdraw from the entire 2025 season.
She is currently gearing for her appearance at the World Athletics Relays Championships in Botswana on May 2 to 3. Just ahead of this event, she recently spoke to the media, where she weighed in on therapy. Stating that she has never been to therapy and doesn’t believe in it, she said:
“OK, so coming back from injury, it has been challenging mentally, physically, but for me, I’m always living myself as a tough cookie. I’ve never been to a therapy or whatever that thing is, I don’t believe in it because I have my own therapy and I do believe in God. I have a supportive team who believes in me and I do believe in myself,” said Elaine Thompson-Herah.
Her comments on therapy sparked mixed reactions from fans online. One of the followers respecting her opinion commented:
“People get triggered so easily . She doesn’t believe in therapy. I respect it, move on. It’s that simple. Just respect her belief.”
Another user called her statements ‘poor framing’ by writing:
“Yikes. Just a bad look on her part even though it was not her intention. Poor framing.”
Another fan took a dig on her thoughts, writing:
“Sometimes it’s best to not say anything & have people only speculate that you are stupid than to say something that removes all doubt. Imagine a national Icon, a role model telling people she doesn’t seek therapy because she doesn’t believe in it.”
Defending Thompson-Herah from the backlash online, one of the users wrote:
“She doesn’t believe in *that kind* of therapy because she has her own kind of therapy. She found what works for her. Y’all choose to be upset for the dumbest things.”
Blaming her for spreading the wrong word, another fan commented:
“Typical Jamaican mindset. They don’t believe that mental health is a thing. Depression is not something they believe exists.”
Elaine Thompson-Herah shared her mindset for the 2026 season after injury
In the aforementioned interview, Elaine Thompson-Herah also opened up about her mindset on the 2026 track season. Highlighting her injury, she revealed that she will be taking things step by step and compete at races to see where she is at. She also weighed in on competing at the World Athletics Relay Championships with the younger athletes, stating that she is not here just to race but also to have fun.
“The Achilles was not giving me anything and Pretty much not competing last year, I think it’s Has done a lot to me. Probably I needed that rest that away from the sport to clear myself and to come back. So using this season for me is like a rebuilding process, not to rush or to, you know. Think too much I have expectations, but this season I’m just doing step by step running a couple of races just to see where I’m at using this relay tool just to get in a couple of races and for me using races to get me ready because I can train until next year, ” said Elaine Thompson-Herah.
She added:
“I think coming here, you know, running with these younger folks, carrying the baton around tomorrow would be, you know, a good plan for us to see where we had at this season. I am. You know, it’s just, as I said, it’s just fun for me to come out here in Botswana, not to just do relay, but to just have fun with the team as well, qualify for the championship, which is next year. So this, this year for me is just all about having fun and just finding about the lane.”
Elaine Thompson-Herah’s latest performance was on April 19 at the Velocity Festival 19, where she competed in the 100m and won the race, clocking 10.92s.
