The former Nebraska volleyball player, Leyla Blackwell, recently recalled being recruited by the team. She is currently in the pro volleyball circuit for the Omaha Supernovas.
Blackwell was associated with the Huskers for a year. She joined the team during the last year of her NCAA career during the 2024 National Volleyball Championships. In that season, the team did not go beyond the semifinal round after being bested by Penn State. After her time there, she joined the San Diego Mojo in 2025, making her pro season debut. However, she has now been signed by the Omaha Supernovas for the 2026 pro season.
Her most recent game with the team came on January 10 against the Columbus Fury at the Nationwide Arena. Here, she spoke to Hurrdat Sports, opening up about what it meant for her to be a part of the Nebraska volleyball team. Calling it a ‘childhood dream come true,’ she said:
“I honestly wasn’t expecting any part of my recruitment process to be how it was and getting to be recruited by Nebraska was like a childhood dream come true. I mean I think everyone growing up who plays volleyball knows that it is the most unique opportunity ever and getting to know Coach Cook through that process and the whole staff was just honestly so much fun and I had such a great time being recruited by them and I still look back on that decision and I’m just grateful that I made that choice and I’ve had so many doors open from that and it’s been so much fun.”
Leyla Blackwell Makes Her Feelings Known About Making Omaha Supernovas Debut
Leyla Blackwell made her debut with the Omaha Supernovas on January 8 at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Her team locked horns with San Diego Mojo and dominated the showdown, registering a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) sweep. Before this match, the former Nebraska player spoke to Hurrdat Sport, where she made her feelings known about her comeback to Nebraska.
Exuding excitement about her debut with the Supernovas, she said:
“I am so excited. I mean, being back here in the last couple months, like going to the grocery store or anything there’s Husker fans everywhere, there’s Supernova fans everywhere. So, it’s just been so cool to be back. I mean, it makes my day every time someone says hi or that they watch Husker volleyball, or even now with the Supernovas, it just brings so much joy to the day.”
Leyla Blackwell will next be seen on the court on January 16 at the CHI Health Center, competing against Atlanta Vibe.
