Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson weighed in on his team winning their fifth consecutive NCAA title at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Lauding his team and shading his rivals, he opened up about the ethics that his team follows.
The championships commenced on March 19 and concluded on March 21 at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio. After a three-day event, where all the programs showcased their skills, Penn State emerged victorious, with its wrestlers delivering dominant performances in their clashes.
They entered the finals with six wrestlers, out of which four of them, including Luke Lilledahl, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, and Josh Barr, won the championship title in their respective categories. After all the matches, Penn State claimed the national champion title once again after securing a total score of 181.5 points.
Oklahoma and Nebraska were trailing behind with 131 and 100.5 points, respectively. The win marked the Nittany Lions’ 13th overall and fifth consecutive NCAA win.
Shortly after the feat, the team’s coach, Sanderson, reflected on the team’s achievement, revealing that they work every day and are in love with it. Opening up about the work ethics, he said that they follow the rules, shading his rivals. Calling themselves a ‘blessed program,’ he said:
“We work every day. We love what we do. We love each other, our staff, you know. That’s what the kids in the program and the staff we work with, that’s what it’s all about. Seeing those guys every day is what motivates me and just continue to learn and grow. You know, we’re a blessed program. We follow the rules, right? There’s not a lot of that going on right now, and that’s one of the reasons, you know, we can sleep when the wind blows. That’s, you know, we train hard and do the right things, do the best of our ability, and things will work out,” said Cael Sanderson.
The fourth and fifth positions were secured by Iowa and Ohio State, who earned 92.5 and 84.5 points, respectively.
Cael Sanderson revealed the advice he gives to wrestlers who didn’t win the title
Apart from the four wrestlers who won the championship title, the other Penn State wrestlers that fell short of claiming the national title are Marcus Blaze, PJ Duke, Shayne Van Ness, and more. Talking about the team in the post-meet interview, the coach, Cael Sanderson, was asked about the words of advice he gives to the wrestlers who suffer a loss in their clashes.
Reflecting on the loss positively, he said that he advises the wrestlers to learn from their defeats, as it helps in shaping a better career.
