Penn State’s Nittany Lions wrestler Levi Haines is set to make his final appearance in the upcoming NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championships set for this weekend. Reflecting on his departure, head coach Cael Sanderson spoke about the contributions he had made during his tenure with the team.
Haines just got back from winning his 4th Big Ten title, alongside his other teammates, which has already earned them critical acclaim by the fans and the sports community to a large extent. At a local press conference, Cael Sanderson, while sharing his thoughts on the team’s overall development, made his thoughts known about Haines’ final public appearance.
He commented on Levi’s nature, his leadership aura, and the kind of success he’s garnered.
“Levi’s a incredible human being, incredible leader… the amount of success he’s able to have and even the discipline, even at 157 for the first couple of years, for young kid like him be as discipled as he was and to be able to go compete well at that weight was very impressive. he’s not a complainer and he’s always positive, and obviously a competitor. yeah, we’re gonna miss him,” he said.
He also spoke about the nature of being a coach and added how Haine’s exit is one of a kind.
“As a coach it’s kinda the same thing just help these guys get the most outta these 4 years,… but a guy like Levi, it’s like, Oh we have just one more year with this guy, so he’s really special,” he said.”
Levi Haines is set to represent Penn State for the final time this weekend in the D1 Championships.
Levi Haines Heads to NCAA Championships With No. 1 Seed
Levi Haines, alongside six of his teammates, had received the No. 1 seed from the NCAA, which favored them with an incredible ranking, improving their standing in the upcoming tournament.
Haines won the 2024 NCAA national championship at 157 pounds and moved gradually upwards, all the way up to the 2026 Big Ten conference, which ultimately earned him a favorable rank. At 174, Haines became one of the seven Penn State wrestlers to be ranked 1.
Expectations are high as the Nittany Lions carry the baggage of eleven years of consistent legacy, built by the Penn State wrestling program.
The Nittany Lions will be seen competing at the NCAA D1 Championships, scheduled from March 19 to 21 at the Rocket Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
