Wrestling star Bo Bassett recently sat down for a detailed conversation on his epic championship comeback, where he spoke about the trials of his journey and went into great detail about how he beat Aden Valencia during the 65kg US Open quarterfinals. Bassett highlights several aspects of his technical prowess that become the signature highlight of his victory against Valencia.
The US Open wrestling tournament concluded with stunning upsets and major victories that have propelled the careers of some of the greatest modern-day collegiate wrestlers to great new heights, with promising international exposure. Bassett’s journey to the top from a grueling past season is one such moment that has been the most talked-about triumph of the tournament.
In a detailed breakdown of the match, Bassett explained the high-endurance requirement as an urgency right during the start of the bout after a trail-blazing double-leg sequence. Despite a 4-1 score deficit, Bassett highlighted that nothing changes even though there’s adversity looking all over as his team has prepped him hard mentally through high-pressure scenario workouts that emphasize scoring more points despite deficits on the scoreboard.
“Nothing can change in that moment. You’ve got to keep going to score points. The way we approach the match down by eight or up by eight shouldn’t change. We want to go get the kill if we’re up by eight and we want to go and tie the match and start being able to win that match if we’re down by eight.” said Bassett
Bassett has repeatedly mentioned his “go get the kill” mentality that served as the basis for his victory. Even when the match felt like a boxing bout, he refused to get his composure rattled by Valencia’s early attacks and prioritized the timeouts and stoppages as moments to recover and strategize on his next scoring attack, rather than giving up mentally.
Bo Bassett Talks About His Relationship with Jax Forrest
Bo Bassett and Jax Forrest are two of the most revered names today in collegiate wrestling, and both athletes hold immense respect for each other’s mat pedigree, evident through their media revelations. Bassett spoke about Forrest’s personal life on and off-screen, highlighting how his personality triumphs over anything, while missing the training sessions that the two shared.
“Jax is unbelievable; super proud of what he’s accomplished. Miss him a lot. Training with him and becoming brothers, we are best friends. Jax is a special persona, obviously a special wrestler, but not a lot of people know that he’s a great person, and he’s just someone you want to be around, and I miss training with him,” said Bassett (33:43).
Their bond throughout the years has transformed their relationship into brotherhood as both young wrestling phenoms look forward to sealing their names within Team USA.
