Nico Iamaleava is currently making headlines for the wrong reasons. But his journey from high school standout to rising college quarterback star is traced back to a strong foundation built by his parents, Marleinna and Nicholaus Sr. Their influence, as a profile by Essentially Sports illustrates, has been central to his growth—not just as an athlete but as a person.

How Nico Iamaleava’s Parents Shaped His Journey with Discipline, Resilience, and Support
Iamaleava joined the Tennessee Volunteers in 2022 as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country after an impressive high school career at Warren High School in Downey, CA. Iamaleava’s senior season earned him the Polynesian Football Player of the Year award, and he was named Offensive MVP at the Polynesian Bowl.
He wasted no time making an impact in his college football career in Knoxville. Iamaleava’s performance in the 2024 Citrus Bowl earned him the Most Valuable Player title in a 35-0 shutout win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Iamaleava’s deep-rooted connection to family is well documented. High-performance athletics run through the Iamaleava bloodline. His brother Matt was one of the top national high school volleyball players at Long Beach State.
His younger brother Madden, a top quarterback prospect, has committed to UCLA. His sister Nicaylah plays volleyball at Cypress College. But behind the scenes, his parents—particularly his mother—have shaped his path.
Marleinna Iamaleava isn’t from the sports world, but her role in supporting her son is no less significant. Described as “the nurturing and supportive figure in Nico’s life,” in 2020, she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. According to Essentially Sports, the Long Beach community rallied to support the family, helping raise money for treatment.
She eventually recovered and, in 2023, launched The Nico8 Foundation with her son. The nonprofit organization supports breast cancer awareness, special needs families, underserved youth, and other causes.
Nico spoke openly about his mother’s influence during an interview with “Vol Club Confidential,” quoted in the piece. “(She means) everything,” he said. “She made a lot of sacrifices for us to be here.” He continued: “She had a hard fight with cancer, so her being able to overcome that and be able to see me, just her so,n play out his dreams.”
He recalled that even when he was first diagnosed, his mother encouraged him and his father to stay focused: “She told my dad and me to continue what we were doing and continue grinding.” The experience changed his outlook. “It made me realize life is short, and you have to cherish your loved ones while they are still here,” Iamaleava said.
Her visit to Tennessee was also pivotal. As Essentially Sports recounts, she missed Nico’s first trip in 2021 but joined him on a later visit in March 2022. Seeing how warmly he was received, she became emotional. “My mom broke down in the basketball stadium,” Nico said. “When she told me this was the spot, I was sold on it.”
While his mother offered emotional strength, his father, Nicholaus Sr., instilled the discipline that shaped Nico’s athletic mindset.
Nicholaus Sr., an assistant coach at Warren High School with a background playing rugby and part of a Samoan family with a long sports legacy and tough values, was firm and consistent with his talented son. “We’re warriors. That’s where [the toughness] is from,” he said.
That toughness translated into performance. Nico threw for 2,244 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2021 at Warren. By December 2022, he was enrolled at Tennessee, physically and mentally ready to compete. His 6-foot-6 frame and composed game presence make him a strong fit for the quarterback position.
His debut season saw him demonstrate his promise, throwing 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns while leading the Volunteers to a 10-3 season and their first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
