Nick Saban has always been known as a stickler for discipline. Numerous stories talk about the former Alabama Head Coach’s insistence on disciplining his players in such a way that come game day, they’re ready for any challenge put in front of them.
Hence, it should probably come as no surprise that when Mark Ingram mentioned a bizarre rule implemented by Saban at Alabama, it sparked a bit of a debate.
“Saban didn’t even want the dreads covering the numbers, so the boys with the dreads had to like tie their dreads up and like it was, it was he had, he had, he ran a strict program,” Ingram said on ‘The Triple Option Podcast.’
A chuckling Urban Meyer then questioned which player Ingram was talking about.
“(Derrick) Henry right? He had the long dreads,” Meyer asked.
“Yeah. He had the dreads, but they were like tied up in like one bun, like in the back,” Ingram added.
Later, Ingram explained why he never had dreads, pointing to issues with growing out his hair back in the day.
“I grew my, I grew my hair out one time, a little afro, man, and my stuff just stopped growing, man. So I said, bro, I wasn’t, I wasn’t ready to go through that ugly phase. That phase where it’s like, you don’t know what you’re doing with your hair yet, like, you’re, what is this kid doing with his hair? You know? It’s not long enough to braid yet, but it’s not,” he said.
Urban Meyer then added to the bizarre exchange with his own admission of having an “ugly phase” with regard to long hair.
“You’ve seen the ugly phase. You’ve had a lot of kids with with them little twisties,” Meyer continued.
Nick Saban’s Focus on Discipline Led to Alabama’s Success
There’s no doubt that there was a method to Nick Saban’s madness when it came to running a strict program at Alabama.
Under the legendary college Coach, the Crimson Tide were extremely successful, winning the National Championship a whopping six times, while similar strategies helped Saban win the top prize in College Football at LSU back in 2003, too.
With seven National Titles under his belt, it would be hard to argue against any of the methods employed by perhaps the greatest coach the sport has seen.
