After having only two quarterbacks go in the first round, former Penn State Nittany Lions QB1 Drew Allar found himself sliding to being a Round-3 pick, being taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 76. He was initially seen as a possible Heisman winner, but a season-ending injury coupled with Penn State’s struggles last season put an end to that.
Allar had a lot of potential to be a very good prospect, especially as he had the size and the arm to be a very good quarterback. However, the Nittany Lions’ struggles that year also highlighted his weaknesses as the team started strong but sputtered out late in the season.
Throughout his four years at Penn State, he had been loyal, not transferring to any team and finishing his career with a 63.2% completion percentage, throwing for 7,402 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in the school he started in. However, FanSided draft expert Mike Luciano believes he still has a lot to improve upon.
“Allar is this year’s “central casting” quarterback. The size, arm, and willingness to rip throws into coverage are all exemplary, and it will entice someone to roll the dice on him as a Day 3 developmental prospect,” he said. “Allar, coming off a major injury, is still so raw that he shouldn’t see the field as a rookie, as the accuracy and decision-making concerns are extremely valid.”
The Steelers likely picked him to be a successor to Aaron Rodgers, who is now at the twilight of his career. He would probably not be playing much, with the team possibly developing him further for future seasons.
Drew Allar Will Have To Go Against Will Howard for QB1 Spot in Pittsburgh
With the Aaron Rodgers situation at Pittsburgh likely leading to the team finding a new starting quarterback, Drew Allar might be in for a fight, as he will be competing in that spot against Will Howard.
Howard served as the backup QB for Rodgers last season. Rodgers mentored Howard throughout his rookie season and has been improving under the veteran’s guidance.
He has also been vocal about wanting to be the starter and he would likely not give that role to Allar that easily. Should Rodgers return, they would be competing on who will be the backup and who will be the emergency QB.
