Who Was at Fault for Kyle Shanahan’s Crash? New Reports Reveal 49ers HC Was Using Phone Before Collision

Kyle Shanahan was part of a car crash recently, as the team revealed in a social media post on Saturday. However, details about the incident were previously unclear.

After investigations by Sports Illustrated and the San Francisco Chronicle through the California Crash Reporting System, the 49ers coach was reportedly using his phone while driving, which could’ve contributed to the accident.

However, Shanahan was determined not to be responsible for the crash, despite having his phone in his hand as the other vehicle, driven by a 21-year-old, made an unsafe turn, according to reports. Neither party was named during the process.

While the team has made assistant head coach Chris Foester in charge in Shanahan’s absence, the latter made a 30-minute appearance alongside owner John Lynch on Monday, with Fred Warner describing his head coach, saying:

“I know he can’t stay away. I know he’s given up his duties for a little bit, but that guy’s obsessed with ball. I’m sure of course he’s going to be around.”

Chris Simms Reveals Details About Kyle Shanahan’s Health

While Shanahan escaped the crash with minimal injuries and a concussion, it could have been worse, according to his former college teammate Chris Simms. Speaking on PFT Live on Monday, Simms stated:

“I get a text from Kyle’s wife, Mandy. She texts myself and my wife, and it’s like, ‘Oh no, Kyle’s been a part of some horrible accident.’ And she sent us some pictures right off the bat, and it was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’”

Simms also added that Shanahan is in better shape now and recovering from his concussion, although he is still feeling the aftereffects of the crash.

“He’s healing. His face looks a whole lot better, but this concussion, of course, being a part of that kind of accident, is lingering, and it’s giving him issues, and he’s certainly still dealing with that.”

The 49ers began their training camp on Monday, but it didn’t take long for the injury list to grow. After practice, wideout Christian Kirk, OT Vederian Lowe, DT Gracen Halton, and DL Andrew Farmer all sustained injuries.
