Brian Flores has signed a record-breaking contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings. Flores joined the Vikings in 2023. Before that, he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a short stint as their senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach.
Flores also had a head coaching run with the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021. Before that, he was part of the New England Patriots and the Patriots’ dynasty, winning four Super Bowls in nearly a decade.
He has now signed a contract extension with the Vikings that will pay him over $6 million per year. This number makes him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the league today.
Coaching staff salaries aren’t like the players’ salaries when it comes to transparency. Most of the contract details, including salaries, aren’t made public in many cases. But every now and then, we get to hear some numbers.
Based on the data that’s available, we can prepare a list of defensive coordinators who make the most money. Flores leads that group with his recent $6 million a year contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles since 2024, makes around $4.5 million. Steve Spagnuolo of the Kansas City Chiefs brings in nearly $4 million in salary from the franchise.
Matt Eberflus, who recently got fired by the Dallas Cowboys, also ranked among the highest-paid defensive coordinators in the league. His salary from the Cowboys was estimated to be around $4 million as well.
Another name that would’ve ranked among the top five is Mike Zimmer. During his time with the Dallas Cowboys, Zimmer was reportedly making close to $4 million a year.
Other Than Brian Flores’, Why Most Figures Are Not Confirmed?
The NFL is a very lucrative league, arguably the most financially lucrative league in the world. Top players make millions of dollars every year from their official salaries alone. Their reward system is second to none.
However, when it comes to the coaches, their salaries are rarely disclosed in public, especially the position coaches. The fans often guess the number based on what the coach brings to a franchise.
“Because coaching pay lacks the transparency of player pay, it’s impossible to know with certainty how much anyone makes. It was reported that Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly received $6 million per year. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio makes $4.5 million annually. With Kelly now fired, those numbers would make Flores the highest-paid coordinator in the league,” Pro Football Talk’s MIKE FLORIO reported.
So, there’s a lack of transparency in this department. Although it’s not a bad thing, whenever someone like Flores breaks the ceiling with a record number, fans are left wondering what the other coaches’ numbers look like.
