Stephen A. Smith Names Deion Sanders As Potential Cleveland Browns HC Candidate: “Hope This Happens For Him”

Deion Sanders has managed a moment of greatness seemingly in every situation he has landed in as a cornerback and as a head coach. However, Sanders’ time in Colorado has taken a turn, which opens the door for an exit in the future.

Stephen A. Smith spoke about the potential of Sanders to jump from the FBS to the NFL, joining the Cleveland Browns. In a “First Take” clip posted Tuesday, Smith’s heart was on Sanders’ side, but his mind was against him.

“I hope this happens for him, but his resume doesn’t warrant it,” Smith said. “That is the reality and the reason why is because yes, you went 27-6 leading Jackson State. … Yes, you had a winning season in Shedeur Sanders’ last year in Colorado. … You’ve had two losing seasons in the three years you’ve been there. This last season, which was your worst, was without your son.”

Of course, with Cleveland running out of head coaching candidates, taking a Hail Mary shot on Deion Sanders could work. Still, Smith is not sold on reuniting the coach and his 2025 fifth-round pick quarterback son.

Exploring Non-Deion Sanders Left-Field Cleveland Browns Head Coach Candidates

If Deion Sanders is out of the picture and Cleveland decides it needs to refresh its current candidate pool, there are no shortage of options if the team wants to think outside the box.

Bill Belichick has worked as a head coach for Cleveland before, and if the goal is to sell tickets, seeing what Belichick can do with an already impressive defense after getting humbled in recent years could be an interesting case.

Mike Tomlin appears to want a long break from coaching, but it only took Tom Brady a short while to realize he didn’t have a plan for a post-NFL world. If Tomlin arrives at the same conclusion, rejoining the AFC North would be the simplest solution.

Pete Carroll was tasked with resurrecting a roster from scratch and fixing a litany of problems. While there are still plenty of issues in Cleveland, the roster was more talented on the defensive side of the ball than Las Vegas in 2025.

Pairing Carroll with a winning offensive coordinator could make chicken salad out of the situation Cleveland is slipping into, and Carroll’s options seem to be spent, so Cleveland would at least get him in the door.
