Stefon Diggs’ Legal Battles On Strangulation, Assault Charges Face New Obstacle Ahead Of Playoff Matchup

Stefon Diggs’ on-field brilliance this season has been overshadowed by his off-field controversies. For months, he was involved in a paternity test drama with model Aileen Lopera regarding their daughter together.

In November, the paternity test confirmed that Diggs was the father of that child. That should’ve been the end of the drama surrounding the Patriots’ wide receiver as the team had a postseason run to prepare for.

But late in December, Diggs added a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault. The incident happened on December 2. Patriots later confirmed in a statement that they were aware of the charges against Diggs and stated that they had a conversation with him about the same.

With so much legal drama and his arraignment scheduled for January 23, many believed that it would impact the Patriots’ postseason run. The Patriots had clinched the AFC East division with a 14-3 run during the regular season.

The possibility of the Patriots suffering from Diggs’ case was a major worry for their fans. However, as per 7News’ Steve Cooper, the arraignment has been postponed.

“Diggs Delay: 7News has learned the arraignment for Pats wide receiver Stephon Diggs on criminal charges involving his personal chef has been pushed back from this later month until Feb 13th in Dedham District Court which is days after the Super Bowl,” Cooper posted.

Diggs’ lawyer, in a recent court filing, stated that the wide receiver has “previously-scheduled professional commitment.” The January 23 date was just two days before the AFC Championship.

Even though the arraignment has been pushed back, Diggs isn’t off the hook. Also, if the Patriots make the Super Bowl, there’ll be doubts over Diggs’ ability to perform at a high level, considering he’d be in a courtroom just five days later.

Patriots’ Statement on the Stefon Diggs Case

When it was first revealed that Diggs was facing a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault, the New England Patriots released a statement. Other than claiming that they were aware of the case, the organization made its stance clear in support of Diggs.

The Patriots also stated that they’ll continue to gather new information and cooperate with the authorities whenever needed.

“We support Stefon,” the team said in the statement. “We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The league also issued a statement, revealing that they were also aware of the matter but refused to add any further comment at the moment.
