The Miami Dolphins fired Mike McDaniel earlier this week after the team finished with a 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. McDaniel went 35-33 in four seasons, with two playoff appearances but no playoff wins.
On Friday, former Dolphins star Terron Armstead expressed surprise over the decision to fire McDaniel, who swung things around a little following a poor 1-6 start to the season. Armstead was shocked that the decision didn’t come exactly right after the final game of the regular season.
“I was shocked. I was shocked. Genuinely, the timing of it was shocking,” Armstead said. “Most times we’ve seen in recent years that change happens right after the last game. So, 90% of teams make that move right after the last game. And reports were coming out of Mike McDaniel potentially being involved in the GM search.
“He had players exit meetings, coaches exit meetings. So when you see that situation, that’s typically in preparation for the offseason. So when the firing happened yesterday, I was shocked. It caught me off guard, and I’m sure it caught him off guard as well.”
The Dolphins also moved on from longtime GM Chris Grier last fall. Thus, they need to hire a general manager first.
Dolphins Owner Met Mike McDaniel Before Firing
Before the firing went down, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross reportedly met with McDaniel on Tuesday to review the season and discuss the team’s direction. According to ESPN insider Jeff Darlington, Ross came out unsatisfied after the meeting while acknowledging McDaniel’s mind for the game.
Following that discussion, Ross ultimately decided that the organization needed “comprehensive change” and opted to fire McDaniel.
“After careful evaluation and extensive discussions since the season ended, I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change,” Ross said Thursday morning. “I informed Mike McDaniel this morning that he has been relieved of his duties as head coach.”
There are also reports that claims John Harbaugh was the reason behind McDaniel’s firing. The Ravens first fired Harbaugh after 18 season and in order to land Harbaugh, the Dolphins pulled the trigger on McDaniel, knowing they have the opportunity to sign a Super Bowl winning head coach.
